I remember when my friend was only fifteen years old when he had his first drink. It was a mistake for him to drink alcohol, as he would come to like it too much and he would not want to stop. His granddad was a raging alcoholic too and it seemed to run in the family. My friend began drinking secretly in his room at first or going out with a friend who, also, liked a drink, but it was only him who continued to want drink more.
He slowly got into the habit to want alcohol regularly, like twice a week. It didn't ruin his school life, but it did ruin his work life in the end. He was a painter and decorator and trained at college. He was brilliant at his job and was always in demand for work, but his drinking addiction became a problem. Things would happen and it would ruin his work life. For instance, when he started a new job working for a company as their regular painter and decorator, and on one particular day when it was someone's birthday, he got invited out for a drink at a pub in the lunch hour. Well, he was doomed because he got very drunk and was sent home for the rest of the day. He should have turned up for work the next day, but instead, he went out drinking and eventually he lost his job.
This sort of thing carried on for another year. He was in and out of jobs too. Also, the drink was starting to change him, making him violent and angry whenever he drank. In the end, he had to move out of his parent's house, because he was so reckless and drunk all the time, and he would always be starting arguments with everyone.
Still, 25 years later and he is worse than ever. His life has been thrown away for his liver has now deteriorated, which could potentially kill him. Not long ago, he nearly died from a bleeding ulcer and was luckily saved by having an operation at the hospital, which left him with a huge scar. Of course, he is still drinking. He looks awful and has resorted to living in a room in a house all on his own. He has nothing in his life and no one, as he is still single. People look at him like he is weird, as he is always drunk and falling over when he is out. He always looks shabby and he appears to others as if he is mentally ill in some way.
He has had help twice. He went into a home for help, where he had his own private room and was put on medication to help him stop his alcohol addiction. Of course, this did not last, as he walked out 5 days later when the medication was stopped. This is the problem for him. When the medication is stopped, he has trouble coping with himself and things get so bad that he ends up going back to the drink. He doesn't know anymore how to cope with life after coming off the medication, so he resorts to giving up. He cannot cope with the pain and he does not know how to cope.
Now, he is 39 years old. His life never really began, because he was so stuck on alcohol. He has become an old man too quickly and if he carries on this way he will not live for much longer. He drinks everyday now, because he needs it. If he goes without a drink for a day, he will end up having a convulsive fit.
So, if you know of anyone that regularly drinks alcohol, or is starting to, please help them to stop or pass this article on to them to read. Everyone should think twice about drinking alcohol regularly. You are at risk of becoming addicted if you don't stop.
