How Drinking Vinegar Caused My Weight Loss

Kim Linton
You have probably all heard about the benefits of drinking apple cider vinegar. There are claims that it does everything from causing weight loss to healing bladder infections. Many variations of the Apple Cider Vinegar Diet have come down the pike over the years. Some of the diets recieved mixed reviews while others were touted as being the best thing since sliced bread.

My first experiment with apple cider vinegar came after a friend suggested that I try it to help aid in digestion. I have always had a sensitive stomach and often struggled with ulcers. I decided to give it a try. The recipe was to mix two tablespoons of Heinz apple cider vinegar (the brown kind from the grocery store) with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in one cup of warm water. The baking soda helps to neutralize some of the acid and has a calming effect on the digestive system. Warm water helps the stomach to digest foods more quickly. I held my nose and swallowed it down as quickly as possible. I was able to do this at first only once daily.

After a few days I noticed that I wasn't experiencing heartburn and bloating after eating. I increased the number of times I drank the mixture to three times a day (usually before meals). After a few weeks of this I actually began to like the taste. My friends and family stood by in amazement as I polished off this bitter drink that they could smell from across the room.

Now for the really good news. Not only have my stomach problems cleared, but I have more energy, my complexion looks brighter, and I lost weight! I shed over 10 pounds in less than a month with the only change in my diet being the addition of apple cider vinegar. There was no change in my activity level or in my eating habits.

As with any diet aid you should check with your doctor before using it (especially if you have medical problems). That being said, people have used apple cider vinegar for years with no known side effects being reported. Most people recommend that you use the organic, non-pasteurized variety, but I have found it to be too expensive and I personally have not noticed any difference in the results.

If you can't stand the taste you can add juice or honey to the mix. In my opinion adding these things just makes it taste worse. The best thing you can do is to take it down quickly (just like a tequila shot). Make sure you rinse your mouth (or brush your teeth) with plain water after drinking apple cider vinegar as it can be hard on the enamel of your teeth. This is another reason for you to drink it quickly and not to sip it slowly.

There is plenty of good information on the web about the benefits of apple cider vinegar. Don't be afraid to give it a try!
