It is surprisingly easy to get a cell phone wet. Mobile phones can be easily be dropped in the sink, tub or toilet; left in a pocket and run through the washing machine; left out in the rain; or submerged along with other items in a flood in your home.
Cell phones are not necessarily damaged right away when exposed to water. Several factors contribute to how fast and how much damage occurs, such as how water tight the cover is; how much of the phone is covered with water; how long the cell phone is submerged; whether the phone was turned off or on when it hit the water; among other factors.
The solution for drying a cell phone and trying to save it is to let it dry out overnight in a bowl of rice. If you have ever dropped your mobile phone in a water bowl, sink, pool or other body of water, these ten steps may help you save your wet cell phone if you act quickly.
1. Remove the Phone
Remove the cell phone from the water as soon as possible.
2. Turn the Phone Off
If your mobile phone is turned on, turn it off immediately. NEVER turn the phone on to see if it is still working - it is the power connection which can fry the circuits.
3. Remove the Battery
Remove the battery as soon as possible and dry it off.
4. Remove the Cards
Quickly remove any cards: photo memory cards, SIM cards, etc. and dry them off. Set them aside in a safe, dry place until you complete the process below. Even if your cell phone cannot be salvaged, hopefully the data on your cards can be saved.
5. Dry the Cell Phone
Carefully dry your mobile phone off as thoroughly as possible.
6. Remove External Devices
Remove any cases, covers, devices, connectors, etc. from the phone.
7. Insert Phone in Bowl Filled with Dry Rice
Fill a bowl with uncooked rice and insert your cell phone in where there is at least an inch of rice below it and above it as well as all around the phone. Also insert the battery into the rice making sure there is plenty of rice between the battery and the cell phone. A bag will also work, but you will have to repeat step 8 more often with a bag.
8. Change the Phone Position Periodically
Periodically, turn the cell phone to a different drainage angle while also checking to see if the rice is getting moist. If the rice is becoming moist, empty the rice and put the phone and battery in fresh rice at new drainage angles.
9. Dry Phone in Rice Overnight
Leave the cell phone submerged in the dry rice overnight, longer if it was very waterlogged.
10. Remove Phone the Next Day
After you have done all these steps, check the rice the next morning for overnight moisture accumulation. If the rice and telephone are both bone dry, test your mobile phone and your battery. Your mobile phone may work but the battery may be damaged and vice versa.
Do not use a hair dryer to dry your cell phone. The hot air can push water and debris further into the phone and cause more damage.
If your cell phone still does not work after putting it in a bowl of rice and trying these ten steps, take it to your nearest cellular dealer. Explain what happened to your mobile phone and what steps you have taken. If the damage is small, they may be able to repair your cellular phone.
