How to Dye Gray Hair Roots

Kristine Brite
Grey hair is a normal sign of aging, but some people like to dye grey hair with either the original hair color or a new shade. After dying hair, the roots grow back and grey hair can be seen at the root while the color still covers the rest of the hair. Hair color root touch up can be done at home to cover up the grey roots and match the rest of the hair.

Step 1

Purchase a bottle of the same brand and exact color of hair dye originally used to cover grey hair. Matching the color exactly is important for the roots and tips to blend seamlessly.

Step 2

Wash and towel dry hair. Change into an old shirt, or shirt that can be stained. Part hair down the middle

Step 3

Split each parted side into two and clip each of the four parts up. Put on rubber gloves and follow instructions on the box to mix the hair dye solution. Place an old towel under the work area.

Step 4

Color each part line in one of the four clipped parts. Take down the clip and squeeze the dye close to the scalp creating lines close together all over the scalp. Re-clip and repeat for each of the four parts.

Step 5

Set a timer for the treatment time suggested on the box. Wait for the time to lapse until five minutes remains. Apply the rest of the hair color to the tips of the hair to brighten the color and make a seamless look. After five minutes passes, rinse as directed.
