How to Dye Your Hair at Home

Ashley Noble
Using at home hair color is a great and inexpensive way to freshen up your look. If you know how to do it and follow the instructions, your hair can look as good as paying for it in a salon. Some of the advantages of coloring it at home is the cost, which can save your hundreds of dollars at the year end. Most salon's charge anywhere from $45 and up. A box of home hair dye usually runs an average of $7.00. You also save money on gas. We all know how much gas costs, so you eliminate the need to drive to the salon. Also the time is an important factor to consider also. You can dye your hair at home in less than 20 minutes, the salon seems to take an hour or more depending on your wait time before you are called for your turn.

To dye your hair at home, all you need is the purchased hair dye, a mirror, and a towel. Everything else is including in you box.

Remember to dye your hair with clean, dry hair only.

If you are doing full dye, meaning its an all over color, you put your gloves on, mix the bottles together and spread over your entire head. Be sure to cover all areas. If you have medium to long hair length, I would recommend getting two boxes of dye.

If you are just doing a root touch up, you will put your gloves on and just apply the mix to your roots only. Again make sure all areas are covered, take extra care around your part, hairline, around your ears, and your neck area. Those seem to be the areas people miss the most. I usually leave my dye on for 15-20 minutes. Every so often checking the color to make sure its processing the way it should be.

Its always a good idea to test a small hidden piece of hair before trying something new. You want to make sure no allergic reaction occurs and you want to be sure you will like the color you have picked out.

Its best to get close to your natural shade. Its pretty hard to go from black to blonde at home, you might end up with green/grey hair.

I find its nice to use a clarifying shampoo before dying my hair. Or I will use a Malibu treatment or Ion treatment prior to the hair dye application. This strips out excess build-up on your hair. It will remove sprays, mousse, chemicals, cholorine. etc. And provides a better base for the dye to adhere to your hair.

If you follow these tips and the instructions in the box, you will have flawless hair every time. I have been doing this for 7 plus years. Its great!
