CVS or Chorionic Villus Sampling can be done as early as 10 to 13 weeks into the pregnancy. This test involves inserting a needle or tube into the vagina and through the cervix. Tissue is taken from the uterus wall for testing. This is the earliest possible way to find out who the baby's father is. If it is an extreme circumstance, this might be the best alternative for you.
Amniocentesisis the second way in which you can find out who the father of the baby is before the baby is actually born. According to the American Pregnancy Center, this test can be done between the 14th and the 20th weeks of the pregnancy. This is done by placing a needle into the abdomen and taking a sample of amniotic fluid from the sac for testing the paternity of the baby. There are some dangers to this type of testing. Though the chances of the risks may be low, but they can be severe if they happen to you or your baby. You should talk to your doctor about whether it is worth testing the paternity of the baby with this particular test.
The only other way to determine paternity is to wait until the baby is born. This may take a lot longer, but unless there is some risk to the baby if you don't know the father's history, it may be the best way to test the paternity of the baby. There are some medical risks that just aren't worth taking unless you absolutely have to in order to save the baby's life. You can find out when the baby is born who the father is and it will be a much easier test to get done. The baby's health is the most important issue when deciding what type of paternity test you should have done.
Always consult with your doctor before you make a final decision. Your doctor will be the final deciding factor as to whether you can get the test done or not because he/she has to order the testing. If the doctor says no, that is the answer you will have to deal with. If your doctor suggest that you may want to get the paternity test done, discuss all of your concern with him/her so that you feel secure in knowing what you are getting into. The paternity of the baby is important but not at the risk of his/her life.
