How to Earn Your College Degree Faster

While some students would love to enjoy college life forever, others are looking for ways to earn their college degree faster. Whether it's for monetary or time reasons, there are definitely some benefits to earning your college degree faster. There is no easy way to earn your college degree faster and some methods will work better for you than others depending upon your situation. In any case, here are some tips if you are looking to earn your college degree faster.

First, you should try to earn Advanced Placement (AP) or other college-level course credits while still in high school if you are serious about getting your college degree faster. This is a relatively inexpensive way to gain college credits and can allow you to place out of classes that you would otherwise have to take. For example, if you receive a high enough score on your English AP exam, then you can choose to receive college credit for your Freshman English class, which will put you one class closer to earning your college degree faster. Some students choose only to do this for classes outside of their major, so that they don't miss out on anything in college, while others choose to do this for any class in which they qualify. For example, since I was an undergraduate engineering major, I decided to use my AP credits for English and US History to place out of these classes (and receive six free credits), but did not choose to place out of Calculus since this was especially important to my major.

Another way in which you can earn your college degree faster is by going to summer school. Summer school may or may not be a more inexpensive option for you depending upon where you choose to take your summer school classes. Some students who go to a more expensive university choose a cheaper school for summer school courses in order to lighten the financial burden (this works as long as the credits will be accepted by your home college). Either way, if you are serious about receiving your college degree faster, summer school can be a great time to load up on classes. You may want to consider loading up on electives during this time, or consider trying harder classes that you want to get out of the way with your lighter summer class schedule.

Work study or internship credits are another option for helping you to earn your college degree faster. While in college, I received credit for both research completed at my home university and off-site internships, which allowed me to graduate with an engineering degree with only seven full semesters of classes. Not all colleges will allow you to receive credits for internship work (especially if these are paid internships), so you will have to work with your particular school to figure out the details of this plan before using this method for earning your college degree faster.

Before proceeding with your attempts to earn your college degree faster, note that there can be some drawbacks to trying to earn your college degree fast. For example, if you take a semester off to complete an off-site internship and are not considered a student during this time, then you may have to start paying back your student loans earlier. Also, by trying to earn your college degree faster, you may miss out on certain classes that you would have benefited from or social events that you would have otherwise participated in. However, there are certainly financial and time benefits from trying to earn your college degree faster that you should consider when making your final decision.
