How to Earn Money from Genealogy

Have you always loved jigsaw puzzles? Do you love detective movies? Does research interest you? Then the perfect business idea would be to investigate histories of different families and find their family tree. America is home to so many cultures that most people find it interesting to keep track of their heritage, their genealogy. Despite their interest, many people can't always put the pieces together because they either lack the patience or the resources. So why don't you start investigating and solve the problem for them?

Yes, it is a difficult job and can take away a lot of time from you. But this is the same for the people who will be your customers. They will be happy to pay you reasonably for finding their ancestry.

Because of the amount of research required, you could charge anything from $500 to $1000 per month of investigation. When your work is done, it should be complete and present a detailed family tree which your customers can be proud of. Try to dig as deep as you can. More information will make the end result better. Your customers won't be happy to find something they can do on their own in a couple of hours.

You will need to use as many resources as possible: the internet and libraries will become your best friends. If you can do it well enough, it could even turn out to be a full time job. There are also search sites dedicated to ancestry. So if you subscribe to them, you will find even more information. However, all this work will require lots of patience. So keep cool and work confidently. If you are organized, you will finish your work faster and you won't mess up.

The initial information you will need are the person's father's and mother's names; to narrow down the search, names of places and dates of birth and death are essential. Your customer may be happy with one side of the family, or they may ask for both sides; before starting your work, make sure you know your customer's demands well. They may not want their family tree more than five generations back, or maybe they want to go as far as possible. Different customers will come to you with different requests, so note them down carefully.

You need to advertise to be known. If people are not aware of your services, they won't come to you. So put up ads on many information sites; you can also create a small website of your own. Try to state briefly what your service is and your charges.

Getting the first job will be hard, but once you successfully compile the family trees of a few customers, you can be sure that more people will be coming to you with orders. Family tree is a very interesting concept, and if the people know that you are reliable, you will become famous.
