How to Ease Dry Socket Pain

Kelly Fleming
Dry sockets form after a wisdom or molar extraction. When a blood clot is lost or even partially lost there is no blood or tissue covering exposed nerves and bone. Developing one of these can be excruciatingly painful. The pain can last for several days to several weeks. No one is sure how dry sockets form, but there things patients can do to help ease dry socket pain.

Pack the socket with medicated gauze. This can only be done by a dentist. The roots will be cleaned out and then gauze with antibiotic medication will be put in all of the roots. Molars have three roots and front teeth have two roots. The gauze will stay in the roots for five till seven, until they fall out. Using this method will keep air and food from entering.

Take pain medication. Most Dentists will prescribe prescription pain medicine with directions. If no medicine is prescribed, then over-the-counter medicine will help. Take the medicine as stated to help ease the throbbing of the dry socket.

Rinse with Hydrogen peroxide. Using a small cup, pour around two ounces of water in it. Make sure to match the amount with hydrogen peroxide. Gently swish or gargle for three intervals of ten seconds then spit. Hydrogen peroxide will help to speed up healing times, which will ease dry socket pain faster.

Use clove oil to help numb the pain. Clove oil is a natural remedy to help ease the throbbing pain from the dry socket. There are two ways to use the oil the first one is; soak the oil in small pieces of gauze and gently insert at the bottom of the roots. The second; using a q-tip emerge in the clove oil and lightly soak the area of the dry socket. This will only help with, and it will not speed up healing time.
