Sometimes Late Separation Anxiety Occurs Too
Due to the pressure that some children feel to show more independence than they're actually ready for, they feel as though they'd like the comfort of their familiar family and surroundings. All the independence that their peers may expect them to have isn't something their ready for sometimes and they look for comfort, mostly from mom.
Easing Separation Anxiety-Change Routines
Sometimes it helps to change the routines that are normally part of the morning to distract the child's thoughts. Perhaps dad could step up and drive him/her to school for a couple of weeks to keep the focus off of being comforted by mom. Or if you have an older child in the house, maybe they could help by walking to school with the younger child if school is in walking distance.
A Comfort Object
Offering a comforting object that reminds your child of you, like a piece of jewelry or a picture of you and your child together may be what the doctor ordered to keep the child feeling at ease and comforted throughout the day. I gave my daughter a envelope with a few pieces of my hair in it for her to keep in her backpack. She actually showed it to her friends and created some fun conversations about it.
Write Notes
I actually do this for my high schoolers on down. When I make their lunches, I will sometimes write a funny joke to share with them, or some X's and O's for a nice combination of kisses and hugs. My high schoolers really enjoy the jokes too, and share them with their friends.
