How to Eat Healthy on a College Campus

Eating a healthy diet on a college campus can be quite a challenge. Healthy food options are limited and if you try to eat right, most people just give up and quit because it's too hard. Well my advice is not to be a quitter. By carefully selecting what you can eat, you can develop a balanced diet. So without further ado, here are the foods to make sure you eat to get the right vegetables and nutrients, and which food to avoid.

The "freshman 15" is a common habit that develops among freshmen on a college campus in which girls and guys put on 15 pounds because they don't eat right. In dining halls, there is a large supply of cookies and cake which is laid out for students every meal. The delicious pastry and junk food is difficult to resist but that is the most important thing for students to do. You simply cannot eat a slice of cake or cookies with lunch, dinner and the midnight snack which most students eat.

Another common habit that students have is that they eat too much pizza. Pizza is fine for once or twice a week but certainly not every day or every other day.

So what kind of food should college students be eating? In most dining halls, there is a sandwich station in which students can get a turkey, tuna or chicken sandwich. These are all very healthy sandwiches. Many students like having ham and bacon on their sandwiches. I would just say to be careful of how often you get bacon and ham on your sandwich because it is bad for your arteries and your health. In most dining halls, there are also salads which you can eat. Even if you get dressing on your salad, it is still very health for you.

Most college students neglect having breakfast because they are in a rush in the morning or don't want to wake up early enough to eat breakfast before their classes start. I would strongly recommend eating a breakfast of either cereal with milk and juice or eggs or an omelet. A recent study was published by an established medicine journal in which they concluded that having an egg everyday is fine for you. Eggs are a great source of protein and are great for your health.

You could also eat fish if they have, which is a great source of protein and the Omega 5 nutrient found in fish. Pasta is fine, as long as it doesn't contain too much cheese and you don't have pasta filled cheese dishes too often. Plain pasta with a marinara sauce is a very healthy meal.
