How You Eat Healthy Food and Save During a Road Trip

The most important thing for anyone going on a road journey is to keep themselves hydrated. It is best to have a lot of water and fruit juices, so as to drink them regularly to remain hydrated. The water bottles, jugs and cool drinks can be filled up and replaced when the person stops for gas or rest. It is best to take an ice-pack containing perishable food items which can be kept cool to increase their shelf life. It is advisable to take with you a big bag of non-perishable snacks, paper napkins, wet wipes, plastic utensils and couple of garbage bags to keep trash in and throw out at regular intervals in the trash bins. Having a supply of food material, drinks, juices, water and other essential items helps save those extra dollars.

It is most healthy to take cleaned and sliced and hardy raw vegetables like kale, collards, carrots, celery, snap peas, grape and cherry tomatoes and fruits like apples, bananas, oranges, grapefruit and dry fruits like raisins, nuts to save dollars during the road trip. Natural health bars like Lara, Odwalla, Clif and Luna and healthy snacks like String cheese, yogurt, pretzels,roasted soy nuts, Sugar free Jell-O cups would add to the variety. Keep a regular stock of of other food items like fat-free pudding cups with plastic spoons, reduced fat cookies or crackers, fruit juice boxes, mini cans of low-sodium V8 juice, and whole wheat bagels with light cream cheese. Sandwiches made with lean luncheon meats and low-fat cheese or hummus and fresh spinach and protein foods like salmon, turkey, soy jerky, shelf-stable fish or chicken would mean healthy food daily.

It is advisable to freeze reusable ice packs on the previous night of the road trip. Keeping perishable food items cool helps to extend their utility. It would be real cool, and refreshing to have something cool from time to time during the road trip. Cooling also helps prevent food poisoning. Refreeze your ice-packs in hotels during your road trip. If it is not possible,it is best to consume perishable items first and then get ice in Ziploc bags from gas stations.

Categorize the food items into protein foods, fruits, vegetables and fruit juices. Protein foods could be placed in one corner of the ice pack, followed by other items. Separate each category by an ice-bag. During summer you may have to store more items in the ice-pack. The systematic arrangement of various food virtually one on top of the other in the ice pack, with horizontal divisions helps even cooling of the ice-pack with ease in removing different food items to make a meal. Other non perishable healthy snacks like munchies, snack bars , dried fruits can be keep handy. Consuming these home brought food items helps to save dollars, but eat real good healthy food.

It pays to supplement and restock on healthy food items from chain, super markets which sell good healthy food like corn nuts, buffalo jerky, pure fruit juices, pretzels, baked corn, trail mix, fresh and dried fruit, veggies, and portable protein sources. This practice save your dollars and also provide for the winter days of the road trip when no appropriate food is available.

Appreciate and eat healthy food from regular healthy and economical chain restaurants found all over the country. It would be best to have fresh and appetizing food like baked potato and salad options, grilled chicken salads minus the cheese and creamy dressing to eat a variety of food. These favorites helps save dollars. Getting the leftovers packed for the next meal would help save those dollars and eat healthy wholesome food always.
