How to Eat Sushi on a Budget in Seattle, Washington

Corey Roberts
It is hard to gorge yourself on delicious sushi when you are on a budget. However, there are some ways to eat sushi for cheap in Seattle Washington while on a budget.

Happy Hours

Happy hours are "happy" for a reason. Many sushi restaurants have happy hours with greatly discounted pieces on rolls and sashimi. The selection might be limited on the happy hour menu, but beggars can't be choosers, right? This article will focus on happy hours within the Belltown area as there are an abundant amount of sushi restaurants within this location of the city. Umi Sake House is a very popular spot for happy hour sushi as the prices are right and the quality of the sushi is top-notch. The happy hour menu is extensive and an average roll will cost around $4 (it's usually $7-8 on non-happy hour times). Sashimi sets go for $8 and contain various types of fish. The salmon sashimi is especially delicious! Another great part about Umi's happy hour is that the hours vary. Hours go from 4-6 pm daily, 4-8 pm every day in the bar area, 11-am on Sunday-Thursday.

Wasabi Bistro is another sushi restaurant that has a great happy hour menu. Wasabi Bistro focuses more on Izakaya (sake house) style bar food. This means the choices of sushi are limited, but should suffice for the average sushi lover. The down side is that Wasabi Bistro does not serve sashimi on their happy hour menu, which means you will have to venture off to Umi or to Kushibar. Wasabi Bistro's happy hour is exactly the same as Umi's.

Kushibar is managed by the same owners of Umi and offer Japanese style tapas. Their happy hour sushi menu is quite limited as well but they do have a few rolls and sashimi choices to choose from.

Conveyor Belt Style Sushi

Any person that loves sushi and lives in Seattle knows about Sushi Land. Sushi Land serves sushi on a conveyor belt and patrons can select sushi off the belt at their own discretion. This budget friendly place allows patrons to select exactly what they want and also allows the customer to determine how much they want to spend. Each plate of sushi that you choose is color coordinated to a price. A green plate costs $1 and a dark blue plate costs $3. People who are on a budget can choose to eat the $1 plates of sushi as"filler" and eat the more expensive plates when they want to eat better cuts of fish. The quality of fish at Sushi Land is quite good and can be compared to a medium-end sushi restaurant.

Sushi can be expensive, but if you go to sushi happy hours and eat conveyor belt sushi, you will be able to get your share of sushi while padding your pocket book.
