How to Edit Your Video for the Web

A web video is not determined by the sophisticated camera you use, or the ideal angles that you have taken, it is determined by the editing that you do. Remember, the fact that your video looks outstanding on your computer, or on film does not necessarily mean it will look the same when used on the internet; you need to edit it, and tailor the video to fit the title. That said, there are some rules that one must adhere to when editing web videos.

Obviously, any video is filmed with editing in mind, and a web video is no exception. The basic rule when filming a web video is to stay away from abrupt camera shifting and avoid taking long-distance shots.

Bear in mind the web video is comparatively small, thus many long-distance shots will only mean they will lack clarity. The best thing is to keep things as simple as they should be, sticking with close-ups as much as possible. Close -ups should be your latest earned best friend as you are sure, they will grab the attention of your audiences.

A rule that thousands of web videographers follow is that of maintaining to the minimum unexpected or rapid transitions, keeping everything running smoothly. Reason being, some of your viewers maybe experiencing a low internet connection and the fluctuations may cause the player to skip over an important scene, and of course the video will appear uneven. Taking a look at popular web videos, you will realize there is very little, camera editing carried out, and very slight, if any, real camera movement.

The other side of the rule states that different shots should be also kept at a minimum. It is true some videos may require many varied shots, like when making a how-to-video, but endeavor to maintain smooth and precise shots. But if you are simply explaining a product, the only editing you will need to do, if any, is to add maybe informative frames and text screens.

Depending on your take, web video editing can be very boring or very easy and fun, you will find that it is different from any other editing such as actual films. But you will only appreciate the rule of maintaining minimal editing and minimal transition shots, and value the importance of smooth editing, when you see the finished end result on the Internet.
