How to Edit Your Windows Registry Using a Boot CD

If you have corrupted your Windows registry to the point that your computer has become unbootable, you can use BartPE, a boot disc creator, to boot into your system. Doing so will give you the ability to copy important data to a disc and edit the registry or make other changes to your system. Due to the functionality the BartPE boot disk provides, there is an excellent chance you can repair your computer's operating system, regardless of the problem. Editing the registry is easy using the BartPE boot disc.

How to Edit Your Windows Registry Using a Boot CD

What You'll Need:

Blank CD or DVD

PE Builder

Windows Installation CD

Download PE Builder using a secondary computer, if your computer is broken. Find it HERE. Once the software is downloaded, install it by double-clicking the file.

Insert your Windows installation CD to begin the process of booting in order to edit your Windows registry, as Bart PE will need to use the files contained on the disc.

Start the PE Builder software once the installation is complete and agree to the terms of the license agreement. Select "Yes" to begin searching for the needed Windows installation files on the installation disc.

Select "Burn to CD/DVD" once the search for the Windows installation files is complete, insert your blank CD or DVD into your burner, and select your CD or DVD burner from the list of available drives.

Click "Build," then click "yes" when asked if you want to create a BartPE directory. Select "Agree" to continue, once the Microsoft license pops up.

Insert the BartPE disc into the malfunctioning computer and boot the system. You may need to press F12 to access the boot menu if your computer doesn't automatically boot from the CD or DVD drive. If this is necessary, select the CD or DVD drive from the boot menu.

Type "Regedit.exe" in the command prompt once the computer has booted using the disc you created to begin editing the registry to repair your computer.

It is a good idea to create a BartPE boot disk prior to having any computer issues, as you will have to use a secondary computer to create the disc if you are already experiencing computer issues. Being proactive will ensure that you are prepared.

I hope to never need to do this. I'm out of my league when it comes to malfunctioning computers. I'll keep the article for reference, however, with my fingers crossed.
