How to Be an Effective Tutor

Kami Valentino
Tutoring can be the most rewarding jobs you could ever have, or it can be the worst. I am currently a tutor for the public school system. There are rules to tutoring. These rules to tutoring can help you be an efficient tutor.

1) Be on time: Working with an after school program or on your own, being on time tells the student(s) and /or parent that you are serious about what you do and you want to be there. The first impression is what sticks in peoples minds.

2) Have a positive outlook: Even if you do not want to be there the kids you work with will know it and they will be less likely to listen to you. Don't let the stresses of the day get you down or the kid(s) down. Stress can be felt even if not verbally expressed.

3) Be prepared: Have all workbook(s) and/or lesson plans ready before arriving so that you do not have scrabble to get things together.

4) Know your subject: If you do not know the subject you are teaching how effective of a tutor could you be and the children(s) will have a lack of respect for you.

5) Be firm but not harsh: The harsher you are the less likely they are to listen to you. Let them know you are serious about tutoring and helping them.

6) No profanity: All because they are children does not mean you do not have to show them the same courtesy as you would an adult. Most children I work with hear enough bad language so I would rather not add on.

7) Challenge the student: Most kid(s) are use to being told the answer instead of finding the answer on there own. Do not ask yes or no question. Make them have to give you an answer.

8) Stress the importance of education: With television kids have the idea that school is unnecessary too succeed in life. They do not realize that the people who is make money of the entertainers are the lawyers and accountants.

9) Always have a smile on your face: Just simply be happy

10) Get to know the kid(s): Figure out their likes and dislikes to show them that your are interested in them past academics. They are more likely to open up to you.

Here is my list on how to be an effective tutor. These things tend to work for me as far as tutoring kids.
