How to Effectively Market Your Law Firm: Brand Building Tips for Legal Firms

Joyce Carole
As a former marketing professional, I have spent quite a bit of time researching and analyzing the most effective ways for various organizations to market themselves. My first piece of advice to legal firms wishing to gain market share is to focus on building your legal firm's brand. Branding is key for many organizations and law firms are no different. Here are five tips for effectively building your legal firm's brand.

Tip Number One: Specialization is Key when Marketing your Law Firm

The first question you need to ask is what type of law firm are you? What is it that your legal firm does better than the competition? Clearly defining that area of the law that your firm specializes in is crucial to effectively marketing your law firm. It never fails to boggle my mind how many firms have difficulty stating where exactly they see themselves in the marketplace. Think of it this way, if you do not know what it is your law firm does, how could your customer.

Tip Number Two: Distinguish your Law Firm from the Competition

One of the best ways to distinguish your law firm from the sea of competitors is to have a distinctive name, logo and tagline. As a marketing professional, I advise firms who are not satisfied with their current logo, to hire a marketing professional who specializes in designing professional logos. The other important marketing piece is your law firm's tagline. Spend time developing a short professional tagline that clearly defines the essence of your law firm. Your law firm's name, logo and tagline are the three key pieces of information that will be on all of your marketing material.

Tip Number Three: Your Law Firm Needs to be Visible

Visibility is another key factor in marketing your law firm. Your firm's attorneys need to establish themselves in the communities you plan to serve. Personal appearances are one way to become visible. Corporate sponsorships are another great way to get your firm's name out in the community you serve. Charity and nonprofit work is another way to enhance your legal firm's reputation and brand.

Tip Number Four: Give your Legal Firm's Knowledge Away

One of the best ways to establish your law firm as an expert in your specialized field is to give professional speeches on areas of the law where you have great knowledge. Writing professional articles on areas of the law where you have expertise is another way to demonstrate your firm's experience and expertise.

Tip Number Five: Use Promotional Materials to Build your Legal Firm's Brand

Include your firm's name, logo and tagline on all promotional material that your firm distributes. Inexpensive marketing material like pens, magnets and mouse pads are items that people tend to use and to keep for longer periods. A consistent and cohesive message across all marketing material is essential for building your legal firm's brand.

Building your law firm's brand is the best way to build your firm's business. These five brand-building tips should help you grow your law firm's business.

Great tips, although I would avoid designing a logo that involved sharks!

We received a mailer recently, "Lunch with the lawyers" and they treated us to lunch at a nice downtown bistro. They held a seminar while the waiters served desserts. It was informative and definitely worth the time. They specialized in elder law, trusts, power of attorneys and wills. I would call them when the time comes. Cheers :)
