Perhaps the underlying cause of emotional outbursts when presenting a political view is an assumption that the politicians whom you oppose are evil and self-serving and don't have America's best interests at heart? If that is true, inform readers how that is substantiated in fact. Give documentation of facts in a manner that allows the reader to examine them firsthand. The presentation of the facts gives rise to honest, open discussions. Just making it obvious to the reader that you are very angry, especially if they feel attacked, will not convert anyone to your political view.
An entire article about a single quirk a candidate has seems a waste of time. It says nothing about anything of importance. It does nothing to show the flaws in the candidate's political views. The fact that a person has winked has no bearing on that person's competence.
Try not to slant news articles to your own advantage. Don't reinvent words like 'false statements' and change them into words like 'lies'. The first implies that something is not correct. The latter implies intent to deceive.
Watch out when you use words that are absolute like: never, always, no one, nothing. They usually don't apply and they weaken your point. Avoid other exaggerations such as: one in a million, without one, devoid of, a trillion times, and the like.
Try to keep a constructive goal in mind when you share your political views. Our freedom and prosperity does not depend on which side out-yells the other! It depends on our cohesiveness as a nation and our ability to work together to solve our difficult problems.
Spewing of unsubstantiated, angry accusations across the political aisle will only widen the political distance between Americans because it offers no anchor for reasonable discussion. Mud slinging and name-calling are childish pursuits that do nothing to further your political views. These practices put you, not the person at whom you are aiming them, in a bad light. Instead of calling another person "stupid," do your best to educate them.
If we have no respect for our president, we have no respect for our countrymen who elected him and no respect for our system of government. I am not proposing that you like or even agree with the president on every point. I am suggesting that your best interests are served by supporting the system of government that we now have or in taking positive, lawful steps to change it for the better. Wholesale attempts to discredit our leaders and withdrawal of your allegiance from them makes us weaker as a nation.
If there are things that have happened that need to be brought to the attention of the American people, by all means bring them up for the purpose of finding a solution to the problem. The most constructive use of the past is for a better future. There is no value in the perpetual rehashing of a point.
Question the reasons for your own political views. Are they a knee-jerk reaction to your parents' political views? Do you side with one party or the other just because they agree with you and support you in one small area that is very important to you? If so, try to be aware of that. Don't vote based on unexamined beliefs and prejudices.
If you are young, please do not overlook the fact that older people have more experience than you do. Please do not reject their political views just because they represent the establishment. If you are older, please do not overlook the fact that younger people can bring a new perspective to old problems. Please do not try to force younger people to adopt your political views.
Please try not to let your political views be fed to you by a celebrity unless you can verify that he or she has been proven to a have competent grasp of political issues based on experience or personal research. Just because someone can act or sing well or perform well in some other way and is a public figure does not make them a political expert.
Please do not let your friends, a group that you belong to, or your employer force you into a particular political view or feed you political views that you accept at face value. Do your own fact-finding. When you give up the right to make your own decisions you give up your freedom.
The best option we have, under our current system, for advancing our political views is to communicate them to our congressmen. These communications must be respectfully executed and be backed up with facts. Otherwise, they will be of no use and will be dismissed.
You have every right to be angry about anything that angers you! Just please realize that you cannot make constructive changes by giving your anger free reign. Rude attacks on those who disagree with your political views are ineffective and hurtful.
Please be an American first and a Democrat or a Republican second.
If you are ashamed to be an American, please look for some other place to live. Let me know if you find a better one.
If there are good reasons for me to change my political views, please help me see the truth. A venomous hate missile won't do it!

Post a CommentGreat article. I usually just call everyone a commie that does not agree with me. Of course they ARE communists but they don't like being reminded of it.
Great article! In this hot political climate, people need to stick to reason and facts and not emotional outbursts. It goes a lot further.
FANTASTIC ARTICLE! I hope AC features this on the front page =)
Well said and I couldn't agree more!
This article should be featured on the front page! Thanks for taking the time to write this excellent piece up. Well reasoned complaints carry more weight than rants do indeed. :o)
HOOOOORAY!!! A really desperately needed article. I've gotten some very nasty threatening letters from people that call themselves liberal. I always thought liberal meant allowing the others point of view. I'm sure there are liberals that get nasty notes from conservatives, there are crazies on both sides. GREAT ARTICLE.
"Please be an American first and a Democrat or a Republican second.
