How to Eliminate Your Dog's Barking

Nini Fire
Your dog is barking at exactly the wrong moment or they're barking excessively and you can't get it to stop? Here are a few tips to help you out. If your dog is barking a lot it could be for many different reasons. Your dog could be lonely or it could be bored; it could also be hungry, afraid or uncomfortable in the temperature environment. You should keep in mind that small breeds such as beagles, Yorkshires, many toy dogs and miniature's tend to bark more often than larger breeds. Of course as you know dog's are not barking just to annoy you; barking is a form of communication for your dog. It can be very useful for when there is danger around the house. But of course excessive barking is annoying and inappropriate.

Getting it to stop:

Sometimes your dog will start to think that he is in control and this is where you must alter his thinking. You are the master and the leader and you must convince him of this. As quickly as your dog begins barking, look at him or her and in a strong deep and loud voice utter the command to stop. If the barking continues, repeat this as many times as it takes to get him to obey to you.

This is only the start and if this does not work try to ignore him. Don't even look at your dog or even turn your head towards him, walk away. If you don't want the behavior you need to stop reinforcing it. Bribing your dog is not a good idea; it teaches your dog it can do whatever it wants. If you get this technique to work and your dog learns to stop barking so much then and only then; praise your pet!

He will then understand that if he is a good dog and remains quiet that he will earn more attention and food. And just like bringing up children the same positive reinforcement to good behavior is the best way. Just remember that dogs have short memory and you must praise good behavior immediately.

How to Prevent it:

Make sure you take your dog for a walk. Dogs need to exercise for at least 30 minutes each day, a couple times a day. Your dog has a lot of energy and he needs this outlet, without it he will be very frustrated, restless and eventually depressed. Exercising him will tire him out and he will become calmer. He will be too exhausted to start barking.

Another tip is to keep him busy. A lot of dogs bark out of boredom and a lot of toys to keep him happy will help. You can also leave on the TV or the radio to give him a sense of company.

A top tip is to make sure to give your dog a lot of love when you do see it. They are very loving and all they want is some attention.

In the end:

I hope this helps you somewhat on helping to maintain your dogs barking. If it doesn't keep in mind that there are dog obedience programs near you to sign up with if nothing else helps.

  • Your dog needs a lot of love
