How to Eliminate Mold and Mildew from Books

A Moldy Smell is a Sign of Mold or Mildew Somewhere in the Book

Place the book upright, spread out the pages, and leave it for several hours.

Then, close it in order not damage the binding.

Do the same the following day and over again until the odor disappear. Realize that this process can take few weeks to months.

If mold or mildew has formed, remove the right away to drier surroundings with plenty of air.

Do not try to clean books until they are dry as it can break up and smudge the mold into the books causing stains as a result.

Only dry.

Gently vacuum or dust with natural hair paintbrush.

If you see brown marks, then the book is probably in an advanced state of decay and the damage is irreversible.

The brown marks called foxing which is a chemical reaction that not only tarnish paper but as well add to mold and mildew to grow and attracts insects.
