How to Get that Elusive Raise

Look Your Boss in the Eye

Do you hear yourself entering the Big Boss' cabin and saying: `I...er..Sir...I ...umm...would like to...uh...work on a new account...'when what you really mean is 'I would like a raise'?

Why is it so difficult to ask for that long deserved raise? You've worked those extra pounds off meeting those difficult deadlines and people even call you the star of the show. Then why, why?

Perhaps you Feel Icky Talking to your Boss about Pay

Never feel icky about money talk. Money makes the world go round as they say and love can't pay your bills. Your boss wouldn't be your boss if HE felt icky about getting his fat salary! Besides, no one gets anything free these days. Even a lousy key chain comes free only after you surrender your personal information. AND you deserve it. You've worked for it.

You fear your Boss will Tell you to Take it or Leave it

This one is a bit tough to get past. Your boss could be in a bad mood and could just pop this one at you, so it helps to have another job opening lurking on the horizon. In fact, there are those who get themselves a new job before they even ask for that raise. This could give them more clout, but it could also irritate your boss.

So, it's a risk you must take. On the other hand, you could swallow the humiliation and wait for your next victory at work when you could ask for that raise again.

You're Worried your Boss will Ask "Why You?"

You'd better be sure that you're really the star of the show. Prepare a list of all those jobs you did so well and it helps greatly to ask for that raise hot on the heels of your latest victory. Indeed, I pushed for a raise at just such a time in my advertising career and it worked.

But my Big Boss was a fair man even though he was hard to please. It'd be great if you can gauge your boss' personality. Is he fair too, or is he a miser? Does he care about creative excellence or is he just interested in getting the job done fast?

So now that you know what it takes to ask for that elusive raise, you need not umm about it any more.
