Children best express themselves through what interests them and their activities. Many children can find a release in more creative activities like theatre, dance, writing, or art. Or, they may be more talented in mathematics, science, and puzzles. Be sure to give them support to pursue whatever positive activities they enjoy. As long as what they do is positive and they get enjoyment out of it, encourage them as much as possible. Definitely reinforce the notion that they don't need to be like everyone else, and do something just because everyone else is doing it. Teach them to think independently.
Be sure to instruct your child both verbally and by action to make positive choices for themselves. Give them kudos and praise when they take the initiative to do good deeds. Getting involved in the community and encouraging participation in cooperation based activities are excellent ways for them to develop and hone their unique attributes. Also, help them to achieve self-esteem and be comfortable with their uniqueness by complimenting the positive traits they possess.
If your child breaks the rules, discipline is important. However, be certain that the punishment fits the rule that was broken appropriately. Also, be sure that the rules and consequences for not following the rules are crystal clear to your child. It's only fair they know the rule exists prior to the punishment for breaking the rule. Another important factor, when it comes to discipline, is your spouse or significant other. When it comes to the consequences for breaking the rules, it is imperative you both are on the same page and are in agreement, at least in front of your child.
The uniqueness of your child is something which should be accepted and celebrated. Keep in mind, your child is their own person. For healthy, happy, growth it is important you allow them to have their own feelings, views, and emotions; which may or may not coincide with those of yours. Always, be sure to set the example. Allow them to be themselves by doing so yourself. Teach them to make good decisions by setting the example. Be sure to let them understand no one is perfect and that even you do make mistakes. Take the opportunity to show your children that in actuality mistakes can be the most wonderful learning experience. Pass on to them the knowledge that mistakes are part of being human and they should not be ashamed or embarrassed about making them.
