Tell me a little bit about yourself.
"I have a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in social work . Early in my career I worked in a variety of settings including a maternity home, social services, a health dept, and a family counseling center. I have been in private practice since 1982. I have a wide range of experience with depression and anxiety, relationships, gay and lesbian issues, grief, adult children of alcoholics, and trauma. I use an eclectic mix of treatment techniques including EMDR in which I have advanced training."
What type of impact can chronic pain have on someone's overall well-being?
"Chronic pain often has devastating effects on the person's life. Productivity and activity are decreased, as well as libido. The person often becomes depressed, fatigued, dependent, and feels badly about him/herself. Psychological and environmental factors can affect it negatively or positively."
What is EMDR?
"EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, is a psychotherapeutic technique using bilateral stimulation to process events, which aids healing. The stimulation can be watching moving lights or fingers, or alternating taps or sounds. It effects brain functioning. What happened in the past is remembered but is less upsetting. It can be used to treat any large or small trauma, fears, abuse, chronic pain, grief, or performance anxiety ."
How can EMDR help someone overcome chronic pain?
"Those with chronic pain often have a history of stress and/or trauma, which contributes to their pain. EMDR can help heal these experiences. It can also help improve coping, increase relaxation, and make social and intrapsychic changes so that the person experiences significant alleviation of discomfort."
Where can someone find more information about EMDR?
"For more information, go to my website at CynthiaBusher.com or to emdr.com, or emdria.org ."
Thank you Cynthia Busher for doing the interview on how EMDR can help overcome chronic pain.
