An Ethernet adapter is an important part of any computer that needs an Internet connection. The Ethernet adapter plugs into the Ethernet cable that comes from your modem or router.

Step 1

Look on the front, side or back of your computer to ensure you have an Ethernet card installed. Look for an Internet cable plug, which resembles a phone plug, but is bigger.

Step 2

Select "Settings" from the Windows Start menu, then select "Control Panel." Choose "Network Connections." Ensure that the LAN connection is enabled. If it is not enabled, select it, right-click and select "Enable".

Step 3

Select "Add Hardware" in the Control Panel. The Hardware Manager will open. Click "Next" to search for your Ethernet card.

Step 4

If the Hardware Wizard does not find your already installed Ethernet card, select "Yes" to indicate that you already have the hardware installed and click "Next." Select the Ethernet card from the list of hardware on the next screen.

Step 5

If the Ethernet adapter is not in the installed hardware list, close the hardware manager and install your Ethernet card driver. Ethernet adapter drivers often are supplied on a disk that comes with the hardware and usually can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.

Step 6

Restart your computer after installing the driver. Windows should automatically recognize the Ethernet adapter and complete the installation.
