How to Encourage Creativity Within Your Child

Different Activities Will Help Your Child Be Creative and Avoid Boredom

Children are naturally creative. As a parent the key is finding the way to maximize their creativity and to allow your children to discover it for themselves. There are many ways for children to discover their own creativity. Sometimes they will do it on their own, using objects you would never imagine would inspire creativity. Other times they will want to interact with their parents to help them in discovering their creative side. Not all children are alike. Depending on their age though, many will develop their creativity in similar manners.

Toddlers And Infants

Trying to inspire creativity within infants and toddlers can be one of the most frustrating activities in a parent's life. It can also be one of the most rewarding. One of the challenges for parents of infants and toddlers is that their child can not express their thoughts through words effectively. This makes it hard to discover what your child wants. Due to this difficulty your child has expressing themselves, it requires a parent to be creative in their methods to inspire creativity with younger children. Toys are definitely one option, as your child will learn by playing with them. Keep in mind though if you have too many toys in the play area your child could become over stimulated and shut down. Try giving your child a choice between two or three toys in their play area. Rotate different toys into the mix so your child has to learn to do different activities with each toy.

Keep in mind though that toys sort of lead your child in a certain direction when they play with them. Try mixing in regular household objects in the play area with the toys. If your child associates household objects with their toys, they might attempt to find ways to use these objects as toys as well. By doing this you will expand their creativity by encouraging your child to use objects for purposes other than their original intended use.

One final tip for encouraging creativity in your infant or toddler is to expose them to different influences. Take them on trips to places they are not familiar with, and let them explore those places with out you leading them. Watch what your child does as they explore new places. As a parent just make sure they are safe in the environment you take them to, but don't try to influence them as they explore. You will be amazed as your children take what you have taught them and use it to develop their own personalities and creativeness.

School Age Children

The difference between encouraging creativeness between infants and toddlers and school age children is greatly influenced by interaction with other children. As your child grows older they will be influenced more by people other than their parents. They will socialize with other children, and be guided by their teachers in school. By gaining exposure to this broad array of influences it will encourage your children to develop creativeness based on influences outside their family life.

As parents you should encourage this interaction with others by your children. Your child will never forget who their mom and dad are and you will never be replaced, so do not be afraid to loosen your grip on your child slightly. As your child enters their school age years they will gain an ability to pick up pieces of influence from different cultures. Not only should your children be exposed to other children their age but they should interact with other adults. Ways to do this include activities such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, sports teams, and sleepovers. The major difference between inspiring creativeness in young children and school age children is that your level of contribution towards creativity drops as your child ages. As they get older they combine all their influences into forming their own creativity and their own personality. This is a good thing, even though sometimes it's hard to let go.

In the end, whether you are raising an infant/toddler or a school age child, there is nothing more rewarding than watching your child expand their horizons and start to develop their own sense of creativity.

  • Children that are bored are more temperamental and harder on their parents.
  • Don't overstimulate your child, but give them options to express their own interests.
  • Learn to read your child's moods and create activities that fit those moods.
Children can become creative at a very young age, if you give them the tools to express it you will be amazed at what you learn as a parent.
