How to Engrave and Etch with Wood Burning
Try These Two Simple Techniques to Create Beautiful Wood Crafts
To get started, the first thing you will want to do is decide what type of wood you want to work with and what type of finished craft you want. Starting with something very simple would be a good idea. You might consider a small wood box or picture frame. Even just a rectangle shaped block of wood can make a wonderful nameplate when you engrave and burn a name on one side. The possibilities are endless.
Needed Supplies For Wood Burning, Etching, And Engraving
1. The block of wood or wood item you want to work with
2. A wood burning tool
3. A sharp pocket knife
4. Wood matches
5. A pencil
6. Clear nail polish
I found a tool that works incredibly well for this project here. This tool is optional and the same look of etching and wood burning can be achieved without it. It does make this project far easier and you will be able to make things with much less time investment.
Getting Started With Etching And Carving
The most important tip when wood etching or wood carving that you should always remember is to stroke away from your body with your knife or tool. This simple tip can save you from serious injury. You will want a very clean and sharp knife to work with.
Start by lightly drawing the name or pattern you want on the wood with your pencil. Once you are happy with the way it looks you can begin to carve and etch the wood. Use your knife or tool to evenly indent or carve out the wood until your name or pattern is finished.
Two Ways To Get The Burned Look
The first and by far the easiest way to get your burn is to use a wood burning tool. Use the tip of it to go over your wood etch lightly until you reach the look and color you are trying to achieve. Be sure to keep the hot end of the tool away from surfaces that would burn and also keep it away from your skin. Go over your wood etching with a thin layer of clear nail polish.
If you do not want to purchase a wood burning tool, you can still get the same look with a box of matches. Light and burn several wood matches and blow them out. Crush the tips with the tip of your knife until you have enough to work with.
Dip the tip of your knife into the crushed match tips and run the tip through the lines of your engraved wood. You may have to repeat this process several times to get the look you want. Blow away any excess dust from your wood carving and then go over the design or name with a fine layer of clear nail polish.
No matter what you choose to make with this craft idea, you will want to make it unique by using your own carving styles or ideas. You can make just about any wood object into a personal gift that will be treasured for years by using these wood burning and wood engraving craft tips to personalize them.
With very little time and effort, you can have a lot of fun working with wood crafts. If you liked this craft idea, you might want to click here for more of my craft and hobby articles.
