How to Enjoy Fishing Without Risking Your Femininity!

Caryn Murray
First of all, if you are a woman who always wants to look her best to feel her best... understand this:

When fishing, you need to dress comfortably. Real sandals, not the flip flop kind, are best for fishing. Another thing to consider is that you are a woman, and if you are fishing you are going to be the sexiest woman there regardless.

Women look just as sexy in men's cargo pants and a tank top as they do in a dress, and women are more sexier the more comfortable they are. Keep that in mind, because when fishing the last thing you need is to be more worried about dressing stylishly. I guarantee you'll be complaining after less than an hour, wishing you'd dressed differently.

It is possible to be "that kind of girl" and still enjoy fishing... but there are a few things you do need to compromise on. To start, you can not be afraid to get dirty! We'll go back to what you're wearing... wear a pair of comfy pants that you don't care much about if they get dirty. When you have worm guts and dirt all voer your fingers, maybe even some fish slime... you may want to wipe that stuff off on your pants.

If you can get past all that, fishing is a wonderful past time! It is very relaxing. It's a break from reality, and if you do it right, you just may bring home dinner out of the whole ordeal!

Fishing has long been considered a man's hobby, like hunting... yet over the last few decades women have proven their worth as fishers as well. I firmly believe that almost any woman could enjoy fishing as much as men do, if they were interested for the right reasons.

I'd recommend reading the article for Women Who Want To Fish to determine if you are interested for the right reasons. Some women just want to tag along with their partner and see what it's all about. This is always, always, always the worst thing to do.

If you are interested in fishing for yourself, there are ways you can have more fun (as a woman) and enjoy yourself while you fish while maintaining some of that femininity many women don't want to let go of.

Get your own gear!

Start by picking out a tackle box or bag that you like. I recommend one that folds out into a seat ( I found one at Walmart for under $20) but I also strongly suggest that whatever you get has a strap long enough you can wear it over your shoulder like a purse. It's just more comfortable.

After that, start getting your own tackle to go into your own tackle box. Before you do this, ask for help if you don't know what is good for what. Once you know the kind of tackle you need, then it is perfectly okay to pick out the right tackle so you are color coordinated. Many lures, spinner bait, rubber worms, jigs, and other type of bait all come in 'pretty' colors (purple, pink, etc.) so it's not hard to pick and choose your own tackle this way.

Just don't get anything you don't need just because it's pretty!

Do your research!

Read up on fishing! If you know that bass like to hang out by fallen trees... that will help you know where to cast if you want bass. (Knowing the right bait to use is another helpful thing.)

You can read articles about fishing in magazines like Outdoor Life, or you can access any information you want online!

Try the following articles...

If you want to pick up a new hobby, it always helps to educate yourself first!

Get the Extra Gear if You Need It!

You should not fish with worms if you don't want to put them on the hook. That can be worked around. But if you don't want to touch the fish when you catch it, it is still possible to fish. Pliers are a must have for any tackle box, even the best fisher will need them from time to time. (Once you catch a pike you'll understand why!)

Another very helpful tackle box ingredient that has helped my oldest step daughter get over her fear of fishing is a pair of gloves. Whatever your issue is with removing your own fish, those gloves can cure it!

Work on a Tan!

Now I've done it, I've crossed the line. Tell me I'm wrong if you must, but women will actually spend money to get what the sun will give for free while you fish. If you enjoy fishing, and do it often, there is no need to buy a membership to go spend 15 minutes in a tanning bed on a weekly basis or more.

Throw some lotion on, wear a tank top (a comfy one) and who cares if you have a tan line... you had more fun getting color that way then spending time in a tanning bed, right?

Pack a few extra things.

It's not that fishing will get boring. It's that if you're tight line fishing, and you get hungry, it's nice to have a little lunch packed to snack on. It's nice to be able to finish up that book you've been reading.

Sometimes I will bring a notebook and work on my writing, but not without tying a bell to the pole in case I get a bite. Don't do this every time you're fishing... but once in a while it is nice to throw a line out there and see if anything bites while you catch up on your reading or whatever else you just don't feel like doing indoors that can be taken elsewhere.

Bring some girlfriends!

Have a get together with some friends that are willing to learn a little about fishing. You'll have fun teaching them, because what women doesn't like playing the 'know it all' once in a while?

Women are often saying they need to do something different together... fishing just might be the answer!
