How to Have Enough Drinking Water During a Disaster or Emergency

Lance Esondi
Disasters or emergencies can strike even though who live in modern day society. Weather related events have shown how a whole city can be disrupted for weeks where residents did not have the supplies that they needed like food and water.

Water is especially important to have during a disaster situation. You can't go more than a few days without water which is why it's the first supply that you need to properly prepare for. It's also difficult to store in large quantities meaning that you need to have some strategies to having a solid supply of water.

If you live in an area with hurricanes, snow storms, or other types of severe weather, the best thing to before the weather related event strikes is to fill up your tubs, sinks, and containers with water. This alone will be plenty of water for more than a few days. In most situations if the water is turned off, this one practice alone will supply you with plenty of drinking water for you and your family.

Another strategy to go along with this is to store extra water in your refrigerator and your freezer. There are two reasons for doing this. The first is that you will have extra drinking water in both of these locations. The second is that generally when the water is turned off so is the power. This cold and frozen water will help keep your food much cooler. If you have extra space in either the refrigerator or freezer, store water. Be sure to dump out and refill these bottles at least once a month.

Be sure to also invest in some purifiers and filters. These do not have to be complicated expensive systems. Look at backpacking water purification devices. Many of these weigh less than one pound and can filter and purify hundreds of gallons of water even if it's already dirty. This device will allow you to catch rain water or find water and help to make sure that it is clean enough to drink. It's more of a last resort strategy, but it is one to consider and very easy and cheap to do.

For most situations, these three strategies will help you get through these types of disaster and emergency situations. Since they are so simple to do, practice these so that you and your family will have proper drinking water.
