How to Ensure Your Child is Getting Enough Exercise During Their Homeschool Day

Mrs. Renee

Lately there has been a lot of news about schools not making sure that kids are getting enough gym time during the school year . Some say its because of budget cuts, and others feel that there is just to much in the curriculum that is more important. Whatever the reason, behind it the bottom line is that kids are not getting the exercise that they need. If you are a homeschooling parent then you already know that one of the biggest luxuries is being able to give your child plenty of time for staying healthy by getting plenty of exercise. The only thing that puzzles some homeschoolers is how much is really enough exercise for a day? Let's face it the weather does not always cooperate, and not all homeschooling families can afford to sign their child up for sport activities. To be honest seeing how competitive children sports can get, some of us may not want to sign our children up. Below you will find several tips that can easily be used as a guide to make sure your homeschooler is really getting the exercise they need.

Create a gym schedule

If you already create a schedule for your school work than creating a gym schedule should not be too difficult. The most difficult part would be to fit it into your school day. Start by deciding which days of the week you will have your gym days. Gym days should be separate from their regular play time, and can last for about an hour. I have always found three gym days a week sufficient or you can pick how many days you want. Remember it is whatever works best for your schedule.

Plan an activity

For the days that you have designated as gym days you can have a planned activity ready. If you know other homeschoolers who live in the area why not consider including them. For example you can plan a soccer activity, or a tennis game at a local court. If your not sure about the rules of the game research it. This way you can teach your child how the game is played for the first fifteen minutes and then allow the rest of the time for some fun free play in the sport of choice.

Take a morning walk

Even if it is raining out you can easily take a morning walk. Just bring along the umbrella or put on a coat and get your kids outside and moving. Going for a walk first thing in the morning is a great way to wake the brain up, and get a little bit of energy out before getting down to work.

No TV, or video game time

Sometimes main sure your children get enough exercise is as easy as keeping the television off, and the video games off. This will make sure that they get outside and moving.
