How to Entertain Unexpected Guests

Unexpected Guests

R. S.
Unexpected guests are a rare specimen now-a-days. What with changing times, the high cost of living and busy schedules of modern couples, you don't like to cause embarrassment to anybody, be him your close friend or relative, by making a surprise visit. Your hosts may be taken aback by your sudden appearance and may even find it difficult to receive you properly, let alone entertain you.

Still on a rainy day or due to some unexpected circumstances, you may encounter a sudden guest at your home, making an excuse for his appearance at your happy home.

Neither etiquette nor fellow feeling permits that you should turn him down with some far fetched excuse. There is a possibility that you may also be placed in such a circumstance in future to become his sudden guest. If you receive him courteously now, he may reciprocate your affectionate gesture.

The first thing you should do is to receive him affectionately. After all, a guest is equivalent to god. In Sanskrit, there is an adage: "Atidhi Devo Bhavaha". Atitdhi means guest, Devo means God Bhavaha means to be treated with due respect by you. If you turn down your guest who has called on you either out of affection or necessity, it is tantamount to turning away god from your door step.

Keep his luggage at a suitable room, if you have a spare room. Or keep it at suitable place accessible to him. Tell him to feel at home. Offer a cup of coffee or some beverage and slowly enquire if he has come on some urgent mission or to oblige you with his graceful and affectionate presence. Before that, please enquire how everybody is doing well at home. Enquire about your common family friends. People feel at home when you enquire about all important members of their family by their names. It shows your affection and concern for them. You can enquire whether his son or daughter got admission in a good college. You may enquire how his recently married daughter is doing. There are so many topics to start a conversation to make him feel at home.

Once the conversation picks up thus, both of you shake away the initial embarrassment and feel quite comfortable. The guest would explain his mission, which may involve your help or some guidance or recommendation. Then you can devise a suitable plan to accommodate him in your busy schedule and thereby help him in his assignment.

On your way to office, you may drop him en route at suitable point so that he can attend to his work. If you cannot fit him in your schedule, you may give him some directions to reach his destination in the city and offer to give him company at home on his return. If you cannot ask him for lunch at home, you may offer it at suitable restaurant or popular eatery joint. If that is not possible, you can suggest a nice place where you can dine at night with him with your family. If time permits, you go to a movie and spend time enjoying the hit movie.

It is sometimes more convenient to spend time at home with your unexpected guest, if he happens to be entertaining type. Some people give excellent company, with their jokes and way of talking. Such guests are always welcome, as they break the monotony and relieve our stress and tension. It will be good to spend time with such guests at home. If you or you wife happens to be a good cook, your guest will feel all the more happy to relish the dishes and recount your culinary talent to his wife and children. He would cherish his time spent at your home. You may not realize the good effect of his satisfaction of his stay at your house. It will cause positive vibrations for your home and help your prosperity and well being of your family.

We feel refreshed in their company. We also get socially updated and maintain the strong family relationship.

In case unexpected guests do visit you frequently, you should keep some stock of ready made food items which can be eaten either readily or can be cooked quickly. You can keep some noodles and sauce in hand. They come handy at such times. Then you won't find it difficult to entertain him.

A guest is not an unwelcome creature at your premises, but god-send aspect of your happy home.
