How to Entertain Yourself at Work?

Confessions of a Bored Receptionist

Norah Wason
Hello my nme is Norah and I am a bored receptionist who has minimal duties at work. I have light phone work and very few visitors that come to my location. I would like to share my experiences on how I entertain myself.

1. The first thing I did was ask people for work, I know this may be the most unpopular one, because it does involve actual work, but the payoff could be good in the future especially when you need references.

2. I also created work for myself, which actually made my job easier. For example I alphabetized the phone list or typed up instructions for my people who covers my breaks or when I am gone to for the day

3. You can work on your skills as well. I created a PowerPoint presentation to a poem I found, just to practice. I also do typing games that I found on the internet to brush up on my typing.

4. IM with other bored receptionists or your friends who have a lot of time on the hands at work.

5. Blogs. I write a blog. I also read other people's blogs. Some can be incredibly entertaining. Here are few that I read:

http://www.greyswriters.com for fans of Grey's Anatomy

http://www.thesuperficial.com for celebrity gossip

http://gofugyourself.typepad.com also for celebrity gossip

http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog for anyone who knits

http://www.gawker.com for New Yorkers or anyone who wants to hear about New York.

6. There are also other websites that are pretty entertaining and give new information either everyday or every week. Here are few I look at:

http://postsecret.blogspot.com

http://www.overheardinnewyork.com

http://www.mannabouttown.com

7. Craigslist.org I was going to include this in the websites above, but I realized I there is a lot more involved that just reading craigslist. If you haven't heard of it, you must be living under a rock. Anyway, you can pretty much get anything on this site. You can find a job, you can find out about lessons in your area, you can find someone to do an activity with, you can find a date, you can barter your stuff and you can find out about free stuff

8. Yahoo groups. You can search yahoo for any group that might interest you and sign up. You can discuss your interest with different people or get emails about your interests.

9. Myspace. Personally, myspace gives me several hours of entertainment. Many people think it is just for teenagers or pedophiles. I use it for getting in touch with old friends. I found my cousins on it. I now know what is happening in their lives. There are myspace groups on all kinds of topics. I talk about my favorite television shows with people. I have several authors as myspace friends, so I find out what new books are coming out or what books are good to read. As I do have a lot of time on my hands, I also have made up a television character profile and have a made up blog with their thoughts.

10. Books and Magazines. I personally don't read at work, because it gives the impression that I have nothing to do. I also feel it doesn't look good when clients come in and see you reading. I feel even if I am goofing off on the computer, at least it looks like I am working. My fellow bored receptionists don't feel that way and read quite a lot.

11. Computer games. This can be pretty tricky. I sit at a desk where several people can see my screen and actually look at it. If your desk is situated in a better place, there are several games you can on the internet. I like yahoo games, but they're a lot out there.

12. Watching movies. This can be tricky. If you are in a secluded area, this is a good option. You can actually bring a DVD and watch it, which may be a good option, when most of the employees are out and you are stuck at work. There are also some good websites for movies trailers or actually movies. Here are some:

http://www.apple.com/trailers

http://www.youtube.com

http://www.atomfilms.com

This is all my knowledge. I hope that I have successfully helped a bored receptionist.

I also am a receptionist with very litte to do. I have asked the HR department (which is where I actually am staffed under and my boss is the head of HR) the accounting department, marketing, purchasing and sales departments to give me work. At the moment, no one has anything. I spend most of the day trying to look busy. I try not to go online much but with all my other work completed there is nothing else to do. Thanks for letting me know there are other receptionists out there that are just as bored as I am!
