How to Make an Envelope

Pam Freer
Handmade envelopes have a distinct character and can be used for many things. They can compliment a handmade card, hold money or coupons, organize photos, hold a note, or send bills on their way. Handmade envelopes are quick and easy to make and cost almost nothing. Once you get started making your own homemade envelopes, you'll find yourself saving all kinds of scrap paper with potential. Making handmade envelopes is rather addicting. Before long you'll have more envelopes than you can ever use.

The materials you need to make your own handmade envelopes are few and inexpensive. You will need: an envelope to use as a template, paper to make handmade envelopes (old magazines, calendars, children's books, computer paper, cardstock, etc), a pencil, scissors, and a glue stick.

If you prefer, you can find templates available to download and print from your computer and printer. You can even buy various sizes of templates to make handmade envelopes.

To get started, gently take apart an envelope to use as a template. Trace the envelope on the paper of your choice. Look at the template and the design on your paper to position the picture to look its best. Trace the envelope carefully and cut out on the traced lines. Fold the sides in first and press firmly to make a sharp fold. Next, fold the bottom edge up so it overlaps the sides and crease well. Use a glue stick and glue the bottom flap to the sides. Be careful to apply enough glue, but don't over do it. Press firmly to seal well. Fold the top flap down and crease well to complete your handmade envelope. When ready to use, seal the handmade envelope closed by using a glue stick.

If you prefer, you can make your own homemade lickable glue to brush on the top flap. There are several recipes for homemade lickable glue. You can mix together: 1 tablespoon of white glue and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Add a drop of flavored extract if you want it to taste good. Brush the mixture on the top flap of your handmade envelope and let it air dry. When you are ready to use your handmade envelope, simply lick and stick!
