How to Equip Your Mac with the Best Free Software

So you've just bought an iMac or a Macbook and have fiddled around with Garageband and Photobooth. The software that comes pre-installed on your computer can only do so much, though. Listed below are some other resources that the Apple user can explore for free Mac software. Get the most out of your Mac!

1. BestMacSoftware.org, the first page I've linked to, has put together a list of Mac applications that, in their own words, "will make your Mac totally awesome". The list is arranged into categories like "Video" and "Web Browser" for quick scanning. Some of my favorite software from this page includes Adium, an instant messaging tool, and Tofu, which allows for easy reading on the desktop.

2. Become a "secret agent" and participate in MacHeist (MacHeist.com). When you become a member of MacHeist you have the ability to complete tasks to win shareware applications. At the end of the challenges, members are offered a bundle of software at a discounted price. The first MacHeist began in 2006, with the third installment starting in February 2009.

3. As of this moment, the special Christmas-edition MacHeist "Giving Tree" is up and running (GivingTree.MacHeist.com). Head on over to scoop up fun software like iConquer, a world domination game, and 1password, a tool for keeping track of your online username/password combos.

4. Try Download.com (Download.cnet.com/mac). Duh. You'll have to wade through a bunch of programs that you've heard of before but want no part of, but you can always find a little gem of free software to make your visit worth it. Plus, Download.com has a list of the most popular Mac software downloads if you don't want to search much.
