Step One:
The first step to establishing yourself as a driving instructor is to contact the Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles office in your community. Inform this agency that you would like to become certified as an instructor and have the guidelines outlined to you. Each state agency and county in which that agency operates typically has a unique set of standards and rules that are implemented for the purpose and intent of certifying instructors.
Step Two:
In order to obtain the certification that is required to establish yourself as a driving instructor, you will need to attend a special course that is designated for individuals interested in this particular career. This course typically reviews the guidelines for driving in a particular state, the laws of that state, as well as various driving and parking techniques, such as maneuvering various types of vessels on roadways, such as motor cycles, basic automobiles, tractor trailers, scooters, and other motor vessels. Once the course is completed, you will be issued a certification exam that tests your knowledge. This test must receive a "passing" score in order for the continuation of certification.
Step Three:
It is important to understand, that prior to engaging in a certification course to become a driving instructor that you will need to meet certain requirements. You will need to possess verification of graduating high school or completing the "General Education Diploma" course successfully. You will also need to possess a driver's license that is considered to be "valid" as well as meet the age requirement in your state. The age requirement is generally eighteen, nineteen, or twenty one.
Step Four:
Once you have obtained your driving course instructor certification, you must gain employment with the agency that provides these courses to individuals seeking to operate a motor vessel. Typically, the Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles agency in your community offer these positions. The employment process may include a detailed criminal background check, a comprehensive report concerning your motor vehicle history, as well as verifying recommendations from sources such as friends, family members, and previous employers. Furthermore, you will be required to submit to extensive drug testing. A psychological profile may also be required.
Step Five:
Once you have been offered a position as a driving instructor, you will have many responsibilities. These include testing for written comprehension, vision tests, providing classroom instruction, and teaching while in a motor vehicle with a new driver. While it does take some work and patience to acquire such a position, once you become a certified driving instructor, you will discover that the challenges you experienced are small in comparison with the rewards of the position!
