Of course some mind altering chemicals will take you away from normal street, whether you want to go there or not once these chemicals have entered into your body. Any drug, that takes you away from reality for a time, can have psychological effects to some degree, possibly short term or long term. (Mind expansion, that is taking a look at life from a different seat in the bleachers or being a real victim, like one in a movie you saw, can possibly change your attitude about certain events for life. Examples: A person, that was or almost was raped, will not in this life time ever return to their previous state of calm. A person, that survives a fight that otherwise would have meant death, may have acquired the equivalent to another degree in martial arts. If you're looking for an easy fight, look elsewhere).
There were drugs in the days of Edgar Allen Poe, that could get you to close to Pluto, so to speak. Now it seems, there are altering of these and other drugs, that will get you that far, but might kill you on your way back. Students of the 70's were warned about mood altering drugs. Now in the 21st century, doctors are prescribing mood altering drugs to first graders.
What really angers some experimenters of the past, is the partial truths offered to the public at large on television (the children hear these brain wash attempts). Partial truths are also partial lies to the public at large. In 1992 or 1993 a special televised broadcast said, coffee and cigarettes were more addictive than heroin. If this is a true statement, why did a former user say, getting off of heroin hurt worse than having a baby? The same announcer said, marijuana was just as bad as heroin. Equally comparing marijuana to heroin is like equally comparing drinking a cup of coffee to getting a needle shot of speed in your arm. An equally false comparison would suggest, drinking a cup of wine is just as bad for you as drinking a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Once it is obvious, a speaker is acting out a script for a dream writer with a puffed up imagination, a knowledgeable person of the real world will conclude the local drug dealer has a lot more answers than the self proclaimed karate expert, that's never been in a fight.
Drug pushers that choose to keep marijuana illegal, are keeping the ball in their court. If you're forced to go to an illegal drug dealer to get marijuana, the drug dealer has the opportunity to introduce you to different additives, whether you ask for them or not. So, to be cautious, touch not, taste not, and breathe not. If a legally licensed doctor prescribes to you a sleeping pill or pain pill and you become a drug addict, you will have to face the fact, you were an accomplice to the act of partially numbing of your mind.
How to evaluate a psychological drug or herb, if the subject is marijuana. Misleading self evaluations may result when not using pharmaceutical marijuana or plants you grew yourself. (Of course marijuana is illegal in many parts of the world. I am not encouraging you to violate any laws). Observation of the results from marijuana use may be clouded, if the substance passed through the hands of a drug dealer before it got to you. It can be left up to the imagination what other chemicals might end up in the mix.
There were some risks, in previous decades of getting more than you asked for, when asking for marijuana. The risks appear to be much higher in the 21st century, I'm deadly serious and so are some of the new drugs that are falling into the hands of reckless experimenters. A lot of drug users are not living to be 30 years old.
This article is not intended to encourage the use of alcohol or any illegal mind calming remedies. However, an intent of this article is to point out the lesser of the evils in the event you are tempted to do something chemically about your current state of unrest. At least beer or wine allows in most cases for the body to naturally vomit over doses of its poisons. Sneaky pills may kill you, before your stomach detects their presence.
Alcoholic beverages, aka liquid drugs, can have psychological effects on people. If drinking in access makes you want to hit people, steal, or drive fast on the wrong side of the road, self evaluate yourself and quit immediately.
Has your brain ever been poisoned, with or without your consent? Can a dream or nightmare live until it wants to go away? (Drugs are not the only cause of nightmares, but why press your luck?) According to a previous mental patient a nightmare can last a year. Poems for thoughts, suggested readings:
