How to Exercise as a New Mom

If you're a new mom you might find that fitting a half an hour of exercise into your schedule to be impossible. You most likely spend your time nursing, making bottles, changing diapers and soothing your new baby. In the midst of all the multitasking you forget about yourself. While it is terrific to be a dedicated mom, it is shameful to neglect your health. Exercising is a great way to remain healthy both physically and mentally. As a new mother you can and should work an exercise routine into your schedule. If you are looking for ways to exercise as a new mom take a look below at some ideas.

1. Take an early morning jog. Mornings make a lovely and peaceful time to take a jog around the neighborhood. Exercise in the morning is noted as one of the best times of day to start working out. The best way to go about taking your morning jogs is to buy a nice comfortable and compact stroller. Popular manufactures sell jogging strollers. Strap your baby into the stroller and take a 15-30 minute jog around the neighborhood every morning. Your baby should not complain about this as the ride and motion may smooth her.

2. Take a jog with the dog. If your husband or a relative is home ask them to watch your baby as you take the dog out for a walk. Once you get outside instead of walking try jogging around the block with the dog. Many dogs enjoy running along side their owner.

3. Indulge in a little nap-time cardio. The best way to get a few minutes of exercise in is while your baby is sleeping. Purchase a good cardio video and an exercise mat. Place your baby in the carrier or on a palette near you and quietly exercise as he rests. Some babies sleep for hours and others sleep for only 20 minutes. Use this time to tone your body up.

4. Try evening walks. Depending on the season and geographic location the weather for night walking is usually ideal. It's quiet, calm, and relaxing. If your neighborhood is usually safe and you have someone to take a stroll with you, consider taking walks. If you are skilled and your dog is well behaved you might want to consider walking the dog and pushing the stroller at the same time.

5. Sign up for your local gym. Many gyms have a childcare center where staff watches the children of parents who work out. Try signing up for a membership you might qualify for a discount. At the gym you can work out not too far from your baby.

6. Try a nanny. This nanny does not have to move in with you. Tell the nanny the days that you will need her to watch your child in your home while you go to work out for an hour or so. Try to incorporate this into your daily life.

7. Use your husband. Talk about your desire to exercise and if he could help you watch your baby for while you exercise. This will allow your husband to bond with the baby as well.

8. If your child can walk or run chase her around the park for twenty minutes every other day. You'll get double the benefit because you'll get exercise and tire her out at the same time.

9. Walk where you can. Walking is great for the heart. Try to walk everywhere you can. Leave your car behind and don't think about taking the bus. If the weather is nice and the distance is not too far you should try to walk. You might find that you feel lighter and happier and that you weigh less.
