How Exercise Cleared Up My Adult Acne Problem

Catherine Leigh
I've had a serious problem with adult acne for about 3 years now, since around the birth of my second child. I've spent more money than I care to think about trying various skin "systems" and cleaners. While most of didn't do much of anything for me, a few made mild improvements to my completion, and others helped with the discomfort of the more severe blemishes without helping the appearance of them. To say I was frustrated would be an understatement.

I was resigned to seeking out medical help; something I had tried to avoid because I feared taking medication for what, I thought, was mainly a vanity issue. As I struggled with the choice, my skin miraculously began to clear.

The life change I made that started my complexion transformation? Exercise. I'd been fairly aggressively trying to improve my health for about six months. I'd made healthy improvements to my diet, and worked on managing my stress better. My intention was for better overall health, but I also thought that diet and stress were probably factors in my adult acne problem, but with the beneficial changes I felt, none made it into my skin.

It was in an effort of speed up my weight loss that I added in more exercise. I already walked twice a week for about an hour at a time, and I have a very active day job, so I didn't consider myself sedentary. Yet when I made a concentrated effort to make sure I got at least 20 to 30 minutes of other exercise every day, in addition to what I already doing, my skin responded almost at once. New blemishes stopped forming, and older ones healed better than they had ever done before.

To make sure this was real, and not a coincidence, I did a little research to look for a scientific basis for my observations. According to WebMD, exercise produces all kids of health benefits, as we all know, and "'our skin is the largest organ of our body, and thus, the benefits can be enormous,' says Audrey Kunin, MD, a Kansas City, Mo., dermatologist". Exercise increases circulation, bringing more nutrients to the skin and taking away wastes, aids in regulating hormones and helps reduce stress.

Most of my new exercise routine was not all that strenuous. Yoga 2 to 3 days a week, adding 2 to 3 more days of walking than I already was doing, and some simple strength exercises using resistance bands 2 days a week. The most difficult part about my exercise plan was dedicating the time for it every day, but the pay off has been more than worthwhile. I have been able to cut back on washing my face to once a day, and dropped some of the products I was using. I only use the Body Shop Tea Tree Cleaner and Lotion now. So while the additional exercise takes up time, I save time in my skin care routine, and have fantastically better results.

Even if you already exercise, adding some additional workouts to your schedule could make all the difference in your skin if you too suffer from painful adult acne breakouts. Unlike some harsh cleaners, or medications, the only side affect of exercise is improved overall health. Try it. What is there to lose?
