How to Make Fabric Pumpkins for Halloween Centerpieces
Quick Easy Decorative Fabric Pumpkins for Halloween
Making table centerpieces may sound like a lot of work, but with these easy-to-make Halloween pumpkins are deceptively easy to make from scrap fabric a bit of stuffing. Don't pack them away once Halloween has passed, as they work equally as well for Thanksgiving. Make these adorable pumpkins once and use them in your fall decor until Christmas season arrives.
Things You Need:
- Decorative fabric scraps, 8 inches or more
- Fiberfill
- Scissors
- Needle and Thread
- Glue gun
- Twigs
- Silk Leaves
- Wreath Wire
- Select plain or designed fabric shades of orange, yellow and brown. Plaids, florals and other small prints work well. For best results, choose bright colors or those with bright patterns.
- Cut the fabric in circles of varying sizes. An 8-inch circle makes a 3 to 4 inch pumpkin. For best results, make one or two large pumpkins and several small pumpkins for each display.
- Make a running stitch along the backside of the fabric around the perimeter, approximately ¼ inch from the edge.
- Pull the thread to begin gathering the pumpkin until your have created a bowl shape.
- Fill the center of the pumpkin with fiberfill. Continue to gather the pumpkin by pulling on the string. Add fiberfill as you go to create a fluffy pumpkin. Some prefer to add a small handful of dry beans or rice to the bottom before adding fiberfill to provide weight.
- Gather the edges of the pumpkin to close the hole and tie off the thread. Flatten the pumpkin slightly with your hands. This creates the basic pumpkin ready for embellishments
- Insert a small ½ to 1-inch twig into the hole and glue in place. The size of the pumpkin "handle" depends on the size of your pumpkin.
- Cut an 8-inch section of wreath wire. Twist both ends around a pencil to create the tendrils.
- Glue the tendril to the back of two silk leaves. You can make leaves from felt or some other heavy fabric, if preferred.
- Glue the leaves and wire near the stem of the pumpkin. Arrange the leaves and tendrils as desired.
- Fluff the pumpkin, as necessary and display them in a cluster in the center of your table.
These adorable little pumpkins look like they took hours to make and are sure to garner your guest's attention. No one needs to know how deceptively simple making this Halloween centerpiece really is.
