FaceBook can be fun but the truth is, people post far too much about their lives on the site. Posting naughty pictures of yourself on the internet is a bad idea, especially if you are trying to win custody of your child. So is posting photos of people that will play a primary role in your child's life who are doing things that are definitely not a good standard of living for children. There have been court cases that have gone in the favor of the parent who has been able to prove through photos and posting on FaceBook and other social networking sites that have cost a parent the custody battle.
How FaceBook is used in Child Custody Battles:
Photos- You might think it is funny to post pictures of that wild party that you had where you threw down shots of Jack Daniels and danced with a lampshade on your head on top of the dining room table. The laughter will stop when you realize how damaging that can be to a child custody battle. Never post photos or comments that could shed a bad light on you in any situation, but especially in child custody battles. This could cost you the custody of your children and it's just not worth it.
Postings- The things that you post on FaceBook for the entire world to see can be used against you in court during a custody battle. Keep in mind that this is something that you post yourself. You can't blame anyone else for it. It will hold up in a court so you are better off to watch everything you say and do. You don't need to tell the entire world your business. Even something that appears to you to be innocent can cost you the custody of your children. Don't take the chance. Post the bare minimum of information about your activities in FaceBook and other social networking sites so that it doesn't come back to bite you later on.
Behavior- Your behavior on social networking sites can prove whether you are a stable person or not. If you go on regular tangents about something, it could be held against you in the courts. If you have a problem with stalking people or posting bad comments about other people, especially the other parent, you could be in for a rude awakening when it comes to what the court has to say about custody. You are opening the doors to trouble when you behave poorly in social networking sites like FaceBook.
Drugs- If you are involved in any type of drug use or you show any type of activity that might alarm a judge, you are asking for the judge to take away your rights as a parent. You should not be involved in drug use, especially as a parent, or drug sales or anything to do with drugs at all. You could be held accountable for it by having to take a drug test for the court to prove whether or not you are using drugs. If you don't test "clean", you will be taking a big chance on losing your children.
Take care and caution when you are dealing with a child custody case and how you handle your FaceBook account. It could be any site, not just FaceBook. FaceBook is just the most common one used in the United States when it comes to custody battles. You will be held accountable for the things that you post on these sites. It might be a good idea to get rid of your social networking accounts, at least until you have custody issues straightened out if you can't refrain from doing things that could hurt your chances of winning a custody battle.
