One of the major themes of every season is color. Runway shows in particular are very good resources for identifying what the most dominant color palettes will be.
I prefer to browse the shows on Instyle.com. This site makes it simple to choose the designer lines I like the most.
In my experience Prada, Chloe, Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Betsey Johnson, and Ralph Lauren are key shows to make sure to view.
It's important to look at the combination of color the designer has chosen to show together. The combination of color is what makes a palette feel modern, memorable, and unique. A combination is a good way to think about cracking the code on choosing jewelry materials that will also be modern , memorable and unique.
For example; Green is one of the biggest color stories for Fall transition palettes 2010. The unique combination of emerald green with black, charcoal grey and yellow ocher is stunning. How can this look be interpreted into wonderful jewelry?
I would suggest Green tourmaline, black diamond, jet cabochons all set into antique gold. Perhaps an alternate combination might be green agate, topaz and crystal set into hematite plated metals.
Remember that tones of a single color are very strong sellers for jewelry. Mixing the surface detail of stones is another way to achieve a rich and desirable look.
Other than stones color can be glossy or matte if you use enamel or epoxy. Degrader techniques and embedded objects in transparent green epoxy is a wonderful way to create dramatic style.
Patina green metal chains layered with hematite and gold is a unique way to do green palettes in mixed metal designs.
Obviously the possibilities are as endless as your imagination. I think the study of designer color on the runways has been one of the many successful ways I have created my own line. I hope that this technique may come in handy for your own.
