How Fall Fashion Influences Jewelry Trends

ANNE RUSH
What comes down the runway for this Fall also inspires what will be created for next fall, especially for the accessory industry which must work so much closer to market week. In this article I have outlined some of the key trends seen on the runway which will influence jewelry silhouettes for Spring, as well as color and materials for Fall 2010.

Neon Color is the first category. Designers like Michael Kors, Narciso Rodriguez and Versace have used neon to pop the color palettes and offset the simple structure of the latest apparel. In jewelry using laser cut plastics or neon epoxy can coordinate with this trend.

Luxurious Materials is the second category. Opulent textured fabrics, velvet, fur, and leather in wonderful colors, not just blacks and brown. Creating layered necklaces and detailed charms for this look will be needed.

Black on Black is the third category. Head to toe black as a luxury classic is important. We will see more monochromatic dressing with black accessories to match in the near future. See designers like Vera Wang and Calvin Klein for inspiring apparel. Use a mix of matte, shine, and plated black materials to develop an over the top jewelry collection.

Category number four is Prints. Animal prints being one of the major looks coming down the runways. leopard, tiger, zebra, python, you name it and its there. Mixing of animal prints to graphics and florals for a collage look was fresh. See Dries Van Noten for inspiring looks. Animal prints under cabachons, or bangles wrapped in python leather can be simple and yet very dramatic jewelry choices.

Another key print to note are paisleys, which work to the Russian folkloric trend. Here is where wonderful color combinations like fuchsia, cobalt blue, aqua, and jade were used. These colors are wonderful when interpreted into stones for jewelry.

Category Five is Sequins. Metallic tones, colors, and all over black sequins on jackets, mini-dresses, and shoes are trending. This is a great material to use for Holiday jewelry because it adds sparkle but does not cost too much. Weaving sequin ribbons into chains can take a tailored look into a social look.
Once again, check out Chanel.

The final category is the influence of the 80"s. The best place to look for inspiration is at Gucci where the studio 54 attitude is most clear. It's not the same old 80's, but the strong styling will lead to bold and simple jewelry - as well as I believe a renewed focus on large earrings, and specifically large button earrings.
