Earth Day was originally founded in 1969 by John McConnell, a well known peace activist. This original Earth Day was celebrated on the March Equinox. In 1970, a second Earth Day was founded which is the Earth Day that most people celebrate, on April 22.
There are many different activities that you can plant for Earth Day that will help to get your family involved in saving the Earth's environment. Not only is Earth Day a way to teach your children how important it is to care for the planet, but it is also a great way for your family to spend time together as well! Here are some fun family activities that you can use, to get your family involved in celebrating Earth Day.
Plant a Tree
Probably the most common activity used to celebrate Earth Day, planting a tree on this special day is a time honored tradition. You can plant a tree in your yard, your place of worship, business or even school. Get a small tree for each child to plant on their own, and while you are planting teach them about the importance of trees and how they are essential to life on our planet. A great place to get trees for planting on Earth Day is the Arbor Day Foundation. You can also visit the Arbor Day Foundation's website, to learn more about becoming a member and find other great tips on things you can do for Earth Day.
Organize a Trash Pickup
Grab yourself some recycled trash bags and spend the day cleaning up the Earth! Organize a trash pickup, and clean up your towns beaches and parks, or even just the side of the road. Organizing a trash pickup is a great way to teach your children how littering is bad, and how harmful it can be for the environment. You will also be saving the Earth, by removing harmful trash and putting it in it's rightful place.
Host a Recycling Craft Party
Host a recycling craft party in your home, where your children can make fun crafts out of used and recycled products. There are hundreds of different crafts that can be created using these recycled products that you have around your home, and it is a great way to teach your children how to reuse materials that would otherwise be destined for the landfill.
Some fun crafts that can be made from recycled materials include Tin Can Herb Pots, Milk Carton Bird Feeders and Coffee Ground "Fossils." You can also find more fun crafts to make from recycled materials on the Kaboose.com website.
