Capes have made a big splash on the fashion world this season. A throwback to an earlier time and place, the cape is definitely the fashion must-have for this cold weather season. While practical in nature, and certainly a warmth adding layer, the wearing of the cape must be given some thought and planning, so as to avoid certain missteps and fashion disaster.
Neutral, Neutral, Neutral. When selecting your fashionable cape for this winter's season, think camelback, gray, black, white or navy blue. While you may be entranced by the hot pink, lime green and tiger orange variety you see hanging on the rack, the neutral piece will get you the most bang for your buck, and keep you looking stylish all season long. Bright and bold pieces are fun and certainly attention grabbing, but they are not always appropriate for everyday wear, and offer only a short shelf life. That hot neon color may be hot right now, but will certainly cool off before long. A lovely navy blue or black piece of outerwear will look sophisticated and stylish long after the popularity of the particularly piece wanes.
Look for Balance. A flowing and long cape that hangs to your knees may be what's the hottest in style right now, but does it fit your body type? Are you petite or full figured? The last thing you want is for your stylish outerwear piece to look like a robe or add visual pounds to your frame. Try on several different lengths to see what fits you best and looks the most visually appealing. While a piece that hangs well below the waist may flatter a long and lean gal, a shorter and swingy cape may be what's right for you. Designers have taken women's different body types into consideration with this fashion trend and offer a wide variety of length and bulk in their assortment of styles. After finding a fit that complements the body type, balance the flow of the piece by wearing skinny jeans, leggings or a pencil skirt when taking the piece out for show. Forgo the wide legged pants and ankle length dress when rocking this fashion piece.
Keep Accessories to a Minimum. We girls love our statement necklaces and our dangly earrings. However, nothing should compete with the cape. The sheer drama and "wow" factor this piece exudes, deserves to stand on it's own. Make the outerwear the focal point of the ensemble and leave the sparkle and glitz at home for another time.
