How to Fashionably Wear a Tunic Top This Winter

Lisa Riggs
Tunic tops offer great comfort and a stylish way to camouflage a few extra pounds around the middle. Unfortunately, the flowing nature of the cut and the lack of a defined waist in the fabric can also make the wearer appear a bit dowdy. This can easily be remedied by paying attention to the rest of the outfit and choosing separates wisely. Here are some tips on how to look amazing in tunic tops this winter season.

Wear Over Skinny Jeans. The combination of the flowing top over a pair of fitted skinny jeans is always a sure winner. The balance between the two styles minimizes figure flaws yet accentuates the positives, such as shapely legs and a full bust. The lack of definition around the hips and waist draws attention away from that area and directs it towards the features a gal feels my be more pleasing to the eye.

Choose a Bright Color. Tunic tops come in a variety of shades and colors. WWhile it may be tempting to choose black, brown or navy blue in hopes of capitalizing on the slenderizing nature of the top, a brighter color will help you exude confidence. It will warm up your complexion and add a new dimension to your outfit. The cut of the top itself will visually shave off at least five pounds, so a dark color will make only a slight difference. Choose a bright color that you love and wear it with your most positive attitude.

Select Tunics with Youthful Accents. A keyhole neckline, beads, grommets and crochet designs are all accents that will make your tunic look very current and youthful. Selecting tops with a few well placed embellishments will keep the style from looking frumpy or boring.

Add a Bold Accessory or Two. If you feel more comfortable in a conservative black or winter white top, infuse some drama with a great scarf, statement necklace or a long strand of colorful beads. A pretty wool scarf knotted prettily around the neck will keep you warm while upping the style factor. A glamorous statement necklace will become the focal point of the ensemble, while a long strand of beads that hangs to the waist will give the entire outfit a fantastic bohemian vibe. If the top has an intricate design and layering an accessory over it doesn't look right, pull your hair back to show off a gorgeous pair of earrings. That little bit of extra glam will make a world of difference in the overall look .

Pair the Top with Great Boots. Winter is all about sporting a terrific pair of boots. Select those that does more than keep your feet warm. Whether you prefer suede or leather, knee high or booties style, a fashionable pair of winter boots with a fun tunic top is a terrific seasonal ensemble. Be sure the shirt and the boots do not compete with each other in color or pattern. They should complement each other, as they will be the visual points of interest on both the top and the bottom. Patchwork patterned footwear will jazz up a solid colored top. A chocolate brown pair of suede boots will go wonderfully with a beige tunic. When choosing these separates, hold both the shirt and the boots next to each other to be sure the styles and colors work, both independently and together.
