How to Make Father's Day Meaningful

Ways for Daddy to Bond with His Child

Jennifer Hewes
Father's Day doesn't have to be like any other day with yet another cook out and trip to the local ice cream store. If you have young children at home, Father's Day could turn into a day that will be remembered for a long time to come. Whether you have a boy or a girl, there are a few ideas that could make this Father's Day memorable. While Father's Day is intended for a day of relaxation for the man who spends tiring days at work, these ideas will give the dad a chance to interact creatively with his child.

Take the day to build a treehouse with your son or daughter. To begin, you could actually sit down with your child and design the basic style that your child is looking for. No matter what age the child, sitting down and figuring out details could be a learning experience for him or her. On Father's Day it would be very rewarding to spend this quality time together to educate your child about math measurements and woodworking. After you are done composing the layout, you would need to take a special Father's Day trip to Home Depot or a similar home improvement store to purchase the materials. While at the store you could educate your child about the various types of wood such as Redwood and have them help you decide which one would be best for the completion of their project. Having your child help with the shopping and keeping a tab on the price of the materials, you are giving that child a reason to be proud of their dad. You are allowing them to help make choices. Once you are home and the job is completed, together you can take free reign of the new project! On Father's Day you get to be king of the treehouse castle. You and your child will always have the memory stored in your hearts of the planning and implementing of the project. This day will be etched in your mind forever while you cherish many moments out in your yard as a family.

If treehouse building is not for you, take the time to plant a garden with your son or daughter on Father's Day. Children are fascinated by nature and love to learn about the miracle of how things grow on Earth. To begin this Father's Day activity, you and your child could designate a special area in your yard that needs to be beautified. Raking and hoeing out the area would be a good place to start. Researching and talking to the garden center specialists would be a good experience for your child, especially if they are shy. On your way to the local nursery, brainstorm with your child possible questions that you could ask about the purchase of seeds, plants, or flowers for your garden. Giving them the independence to ask a question would be a good lesson that you could teach your child on this special day. Once you and your child choose the seeds, plants, or flowers that you wish to plant, you may head home to your garden. The joy of planting will be remembered by both of you as you watch the growing process take place. This memorable Father's Day activity will bloom again and again in your minds.

Father's Day should be a day to reconnect and appreciate the bond between father and child. There is no better way to make Father's Day memorable than by spending an entire day together working on a project. The educational value with both projects is also a definite plus. Make your child proud and show them that Father's Day is about the love you have for each other and the interaction that sometimes gets pushed to the wayside. They will treasure that treehouse or garden just as much as they treasure your attention and love. Making Father's Day memorable will be a fantastic experience as you built a gift of love together.
