How to Make Father's Day Special

Special Gifts for that Special Dad

Carolyn R Scheidies
Father's Day isn't far away and most of us are trying to figure out what to get that special father, that Dad, in our lives. We might honor more than one father on Father's Day. While my father is gone, I still have a wonderful father-in-law as well as my husband, the father of our two children, to plan for.

For our children, both grown and living away from home, Father's Day will probably mean an e-card and a phone call to Dad. When they were younger, we turned Father's Day into a real celebration. I don't know when Keith and I started the tradition that whose ever special day it was, whether that was a birthday or Mother's Day/Father's Day, the others in the family planned the day.

When someone asked Keith what he was doing for his birthday or for Father's Day, he could only shrug and say, "I have no idea." And he didn't. The kids and I planned the entire day, trying to fit in the things Keith likes to do, like eating out, going to a movie-or both and more.

With the children grown and our son a father in his own right, celebrating Father's Day falls on my shoulders. My husband is a great dad, a great father, now a grandfather, and I want to celebrate that. Like everyone else, I've been considering my options for those special fathers in my life.

Send a card. I will be sending a Father's Day e-card to my father-in-law who provided such a wonderful example of what a father should be to my husband. I'll also send one to Keith. While some think only a card by snail-mail will do, I love the animations of e-cards. Besides, Keith loves them, too. An e-card is cheaper than a card by snail-mail and it will get to it's destination in seconds, not days.

Take him out to eat. Keith loves eating out. What better time to do so than on Father's Day, the day set aside to honor him as a father. I'm not sure where, yet, but we will eat out.

Visit. If you are close enough, take the time to visit that special father, that special Dad, in your life for Father's Day.

Buy a gift that keeps on giving. Cards, letters, email and phone calls are great and highly recommended, but today you can do something to bring that special father right into your home. One of the gifts that keep on giving is to set Dad up with a web cam. With both of you having a web cam, no matter how far apart you live from each other, you can talk face to face (ok camera to camera), and Dad can see his child and grandfather can have his grandkids wish him happy Father's Day in real time.

Have a creative or not so creative talent? Use it to make that special father a one-of-a-kind gift for Father's Day. Bake something special on Father's Day. Make a card or gift for Dad. It doesn't have to be perfection, just made with thought and love.

Love is the key after all. When all is said and done, the best thing we can do is to show that special Dad that we both love and respect him, not just on Father's Day, but every day of the year.

Happy Father's Day!
