How to Feel Secure Living in an Apartment

Mary Kirkland
Whether you are moving into your first place or just getting a larger place, a lot of people will live in an Apartment at some point in their lives. There are some things you can to feel more secure in your new home. The first thing is to take a look around the neighborhood, are there people on the street selling drugs? Do you see Hooker's walking up and down the sidewalk, stopping people to ask if they want to 'Party'. Do your neighbor's front lawns look like the Pick-A-Part yard? If you can yes to any of these questions you might want to knock on a few of you're soon to be neighbor's doors and ask them if this is a safe neighborhood.

After you do find a nice Apartment in a safe neighborhood, the next thing you should look into getting is Renters Insurance. Now I know you are thinking, "Oh no, Insurance is too expensive." But in most cases you would be wrong. Call several places and get quotes. When I did this last year I found my Rental Insurance would be about $15.00 a month. That's for $50,000 coverage in case of a Fire or something else that destroys your belongings.

Some things you can do to your Apartment to make is harder for criminals to break into are making sure you have deadbolts on all the doors. All the windows should have locks on them. If you have sliding glass windows, you can get Thumb Locks.

After you move in and have been there a few days, try to get to know your neighbors. Exchange phone numbers with them and make arrangements to watch each others apartments when you are not at home.

Get to know your Managers and report anyone who seems suspicious. Most Apartment Managers will want to know if there are people walking around on the property looking into the cars or peeking into windows.

The thing most people worry about the most is Apartment fires. While you can't stop a fire from happening you can knock on your neighbor's door if you hear the smoke detector going off. If you hear a smoke detector going off, the first thing you should do is knock on that person's door. If they don't answer and you don't see any visible smoke, call the manager and tell them. Most times the manager will come with a key and make sure there's no fire in the apartment.

If the smoke detector is going off and you can smell smoke or see flames, call the fire department and then call the managers. It's better to be safe even if your neighbor only left a roast in the oven that's burning.
