How to Make Felt Flower Spring Decorations

Easy Crafts for Gifts and Decor

Amanda Herron
Felt flowers are easy to make, inexpensive and fun crafts for almost any age group. Younger children may need some pieces pre-made for them to assemble.

Choose 8x10 sheets of felt in the colors you want to use for the flower craft decorations. At least one sheet of yellow and one sheet of green for the flower center, stem and leaves. Choose two felt craft sheets in pink, purple, blue or another bright spring color for the petals.

Align one of the colored sheets vertically and use a fabric pencil to mark it in strips about an inch and a half wide. Cut the strips apart. Fold one strip in half vertically. Choose a color of thread to match the felt color. Felt will not stay folded, so you will half to hold it together at one end as you feed the strip through the sewing machine.

Sew straight down the strip, as close to the edge as possible, to sew the halves of the strip in place. Now you have a strip of felt about 10 inches long and ¾ inch wide. Feed the strip of craft felt back through the sewing machine again, this time sewing straight down along the fold. This will put two seams in your felt strip making it stronger and easier to use in your flower craft.

Repeat this process for the yellow and green felt until you have an abundance of sewn strips for all the colors you need in your spring decorations.

Take one colored felt strip and begin to roll the end in to make a spiraled circle. If you want perfect circles for your flower petals, continue to roll the entire strip into a circle. Place a drop of super glue craft glue every few inches along the strip to hold it together. If you want your flower petals to be more "petal" shaped like teardrops, you will need to break the strip into smaller pieces. Roll a small circle about an inch wide and glue the strip in place, trimming the leftover felt. Then wrap the strip around the circle bringing the ends to a point. Each time you wrap the strip, mold the point of the petal out a little more, gluing as you go.

Finish all the petals and let the dry. Using the process above, make two or three green leaves from craft felt. Make a circle center using the yellow felt strips. Finally, take a green sewn strip and fold it in half lengthwise for a double-ply stem. Glue the strip along the fold.

Assemble the spring flower craft decoration by gluing the petals around the yellow center with the points sticking out. Glue the leaves to the stem, then attach the stem to the back of the flower head.

These simple spring crafts can be used as decorations anywhere in the home or office. Give them as gifts, attach them to spring bouquets, or make small ones into pins and brooches for spring gifts. Make several and attach to a grapevine wreath. Use the same process to make butterflies and bees for more spring craft decorations.

Add fun colored buttons, beads in cool shapes, and ribbon scraps to make your flower craft decorations even more fun and cute.
