Supplies Needed:
Cream and red felt
Coordinating flannel scraps (look for pinks and reds)
Valentine themed buttons
Thread
Scissors
Sewing machine or needle
Fiberfill
Paper
Pencil
Optional: pinking shears, ribbon or other accents, pink writing pen
Step-by-Step Directions to Make Felt Heart Cookie Valentine's Day Cards
1. Use the paper and pencil to draw your heart templates. I folded a piece of 8.5 x 11 inch paper in half to draw my heart along the folded edge. In the photo, the finished outside heart is 5.5 inches wide by 6 inches long.
2. Cut the large heart template.
3. Make a smaller heart template by shrinking down your large heart template.
4. Cut out the small heart template.
5. Fold the large heart template in half. The bottom portion will become the template for the card pocket in the back. See the photo for an example.
6. Cut 2 large hearts from your desired felt color.
7. Take the large heart template and line the fold up to the top of the same color of felt so that the bottom of the heart is on the felt.
8. Cut out 1 card pocket.
9. Cut 1 small heart from the flannel fabric.
10. Layer the small heart on top of 1 large heart. Make sure the small heart fits within the large heart. Make any sizing adjustments.
11. Pin the small heart to the large heart.
12. Stitch around the small heart. I used a decorative blanket stitch in the example photo. This set becomes the top unit.
13. Choose a Valentine themed button and sew it to the top unit.
14. Set aside the completed top unit.
15. Take the card pocket and add some decorative accents. Stitch along the long top edge or sew on some pretty ribbon.
16. Layer the card pocket to the other large heart and pin together, but do not stitch yet.
17. Take the completed top unit and pin it to the bottom unit with wrong sides together.
18. Sew along the edge through all the pieces, taking care that the card pocket is within the seam allowance. Be sure to leave an opening for the stuffing.
19. Remove the pins and add fiberfill stuffing to your desired thickness.
20. Sew the opening closed.
21. Optional: Use the pinking shears to cut around the heart to make a pretty edge.
22. Cut a piece of paper and write a special Valentine's Day message for your recipient. Decorate as desired.
23. Tuck the message into the felt heart cookie card pocket.
24. Give your Valentine a felt heart cookie!
