How to Make Felt Mitten Ornaments for Christmas
Ornaments Are Inexpensive to Create and Come with Easy Instructions
Felt ornaments make a perfect choice for kids Christmas crafts and ornament construction for adults as well. The design for these mitten Christmas ornaments can easily be modified, making them an ideal choice for a holiday season sprinkled with your own distinctive touch.
Supplies Needed to Construct Felt Mitten Ornaments for Christmas
*Several sheets of red felt
*Pattern for felt mitten ornaments (check image 2 for a free pattern)
*Pen or pencil for tracing
*Craft scissors
*White craft paint for snowflake design
*Spool of thin red Christmas ribbon
*Glue gun and glue sticks
*Poly-fil stuffing or cotton balls
*Thin craft boa (I found this at Michaels Craft Store)
Print out the pattern provided in image two then trace the mitten ornaments onto the sheets of red felt. Be sure to twist and turn your Christmas ornament pattern so that you can get as many pieces out of one sheet of felt.
Cut out the felt mittens for your Christmas ornaments. I recommend using a good pair of craft scissors for this because they are more proficient in corners and provide a cleaner cut when using felt. When your Christmas ornaments are cut out, divide these into two equal stacks. Put one pile to the side.
You are now ready to decorate half of the felt mitten ornaments with a snowflake design. With white craft paint, draw an X onto the center of each felt mitten. Then draw a straight line down the middle of your X, and then another across or sideways through the X again. You should have a design that looks similar to an asterisk sign when you are finished. ( * ).
Next, put a small raised dot of paint in the very center of the snowflake design where all lines are touching (small raised dots of paint should look like miniature Hershey kisses). Now you are ready to make the same raised dots at the ends of each line in the snowflake design.
After you complete the snowflake design, set these in a safe place and allow the craft paint to dry over night.
Once the paint is dry, your felt mitten ornaments will be ready to assemble. Cut strips of thin red Christmas ribbon about four to five inches long. These ribbon strips will be the loops to hang your Christmas ornaments. Take an undecorated felt piece and glue the loop on the inside. Try to glue this loop so that it will hang at an angle to one side of the hand opening.
Next, apply hot glue to the edges of the undecorated felt piece EXCLUDING the opening of the mitten. Take a decorated felt piece and line these up. Press both the front and back pieces of the felt together until firmly in place.
Christmas ornaments are now ready to be stuffed. If you do not have Poly-fil, cotton balls will suffice. Stuff them so that the felt mittens look full and then close the hole up with the glue gun.
Lastly, you are ready to apply the white feather craft boa to your felt mitten ornaments. Hot glue your craft boa in place along the top of your felt mitten ornaments and then cut off any excess.
These mitten ornaments make very cute embellishments for Christmas presents or use them for personalized name tags or holiday decorations. You might also consider making a special children's Christmas tree for your younger decorators. These ornaments pair wonderfully with my Chubby Gingerbread Man Ornaments design, which are also constructed from the same easy to use felt. Let your little ones rearrange these unbreakable ornaments to their hearts desire, and take in Christmas memories that will last for a lifetime
